Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [10]
1, January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day in our country. It was on this day, in
1950, the new constitution of independent India came into force and India
became a democratic republic. The Constituent Assembly headed by Dr.
Rajendra Prasad, with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the Chairman of the Drafting
Committee, took more than two years to bring the world's lengthiest
constitution to its final shape.
. The enormous task before the Constituent Assembly was to frame the basic
law that would formalize India as a truly democratic nation. Democracy is
aptly defined as a system of Government by the people, for the people and of
the people. The founding fathers of the Constitution, therefore, had to ensure
that the basic law of the land contained sufficient provisions for the
fulfilment of the democratic aspirations of the people of India not only in the
political sphere but also in the social and economic spheres. That explains the
inclusion of a separate part in the Constitution, called the Directive
Principles of State Policy.
. These principles signify the fact that the framers of the Constitution were
well aware of the wide gaps and inequalities that existed among the various
sections of the Indian population. The Constitution makers had the wisdom to
appreciate that political democracy is meaningless when an overwhelming
majority of the population is historically trapped in poverty, illiteracy, ill-
health and superstition. The Central and State Governments were expected to
frame policies so that every citizen is assured of a decent living standard
irrespective of sex, caste, religion, language and region.
The makers of our Constitution describe India as a Union of States and not as
a federation. Being well conversant with the diversity of the nation in terms.
of the language, religion, caste and region, and its implications on the
intended socio-economic development of the country as a whole, the makers
of the Constitution opted for a political system in which the Central
Government is equipped with overwhelming administrative, legislative and
financial muscle. Most of the nations' policies and programmes for socio-
economic development originate at the Central Government, and the
responsibility for their successful implementation is entrusted to the states.

1. Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret message in the
communication process. One of the greatest gitts any of us ean ever receive is
the gift of listening. It is also one of the greatest gitts we can ever give.
Unfortunately, it appears to be a lost art. We live in a world where everyone
is talking but few are listening. What often passes for listening is simply one
person pausing to collect their thoughts for their next soliloquy.
. Hearing refers to the sounds that you hear, whereas listening requires more
than that it requires focus. Listening means paying attention not only to the
story, but how it is told, the use of language and voice, and how the other

person uses his or her body. In other words, it means being aware of both
verbal and non-verbal messages. Your ability to listen effectively depends on
the degree to which you perceive and understand these messages.
. Listening is a difficult task. Like every skill the more you do it, the better you
get up. Listening can be developed through practice, or lost if not used
regularly, Good listeners focus on what they are hearing. They pause to think
about what they've heard before responding. They ask questions because they
want to know the answers. Not just to keep the conversation going.
. So often, we are distracted with other things. We try to listen while
continuing to work on the computer or watch television. To be fully present
means we eliminate these distractions and focus exclusively on the other
person. It takes great effort to be fully in the moment, leaning forward, eyes
and heart open. Words are only the part of communication. Sometimes we
need to experience the other person's feelings to really understand. We need
to listen with our heart as well as our mind. We must repeat back what the
other person has said. When we do this-and do it accurately-we communicate
that we understand. It also gives us an opportunity to re-calibrate our
understanding if we have misunderstood something. Plenty of people are
good talkers, few are good listeners. If you develop the latter skill, you will
find yourself invited into amazing conversations that wouldn't otherwise
happen.

packages over a period of five weeks. It can clearly be seen that ActiveX was the most
popular computer package to download, whilst Net was the least popular of the three.
To begin, downloads of ActiveX and Java showed similar patterns, with both gradually
increasing from week 1 to week 5. However, the purchases of Active X remained
significantly higher than that of the other product over this time frame. In week 1,
purchases of ActiveX stood at around 75,000, while those of Java were about 30,000
lower. With the exception of a slight fall in week 4, downloading of ActiveX kept
increasing until it reached a peak in the final week of just over 120,000. Java downloads

The product that was downloaded the least was Net. This began at slightly under 40,000,

approximately 25,000. It then increased sharply over the following two weeks to finish
at about 50,000, which was well below that of ActiveX.

The given pie chart illustrates how internet users aged 15+ prefer to access the internet
at home or in other places.
The data shows that people aged 15 and over spend most of their time using electronic
gadgets and going online accessing internet for different purposes
From the pie chart it is clear that the majority of people prefer to use smartphone that
covers 30 per cent, which means that one third of the total young generation uses
smartphones to go online. Laptops are also very popular as there is only three percent of
difference between the two. As shown in the chart 27 per cent people prefer to use
laptops to go online. 22 per cent prefer to use a tablet, whereas a desktop computer
accounts for 18 per cent of users’ preferred devices, and only a small minority of just
3% prefer a device other than these four main popular devices.
To conclude, it is clearly evident that the devices like laptops and tablets are the most
popular choices, it shows that the majority of people access internet on portable devices.
The desktop computer which is not so convenient to use is the least popular of the four
main devices. It can be said that in the future we can expect to see even more and more
people accessing the internet with smartphones as their preferred choice.

Subject: Need to improve miserable living conditions in slums
Sir,
Through the columns of your reported newspaper, I would like to draw the kind
attention of the concerned authorities towards the miserable living conditions in slums.
‘A country's growth depends on the growth of its people. The people living in slums do
not have basic amenities like clean drinking water, proper power supply and healthy
food. Many can be seen ravaging through dustbins to get food. Lack of proper sanitation
and living among such dreadful conditions lead to spread of many diseases. They are
illiterate and thus lack job opportunities. They live in congested spaces where proper
breathing is also unavailable.
Only if the slum dwellers get the basic amenities, the nation can be said to have truly
progressed,
Thanking you
Yours sincerely

Subject: Enquiry About Accommodation

to inquire if there is a room available as accommodation for a paying guest around this
area. If so, please let me know whether it is single or twin sharing. Besides this, could
you also send me the details regarding monthly charges of boarding and lodging? I am
interested to know what kind of other facilities you also provide. If there are 24 hours

shopping centre located close by.

some distant relatives. Looking forward to hearing from you.

‘Oh, why don’t you mind your own business,’ said Valli. But she laughed all the same,
and the conductor laughed too.
But the old woman went on with her drivel. ‘Is it proper for such a young person to
travel alone? Do you know exactly where you're going in town?
What's the street? What’s the house number?
“You needn’t bother about me. I can take care of myself,’ Valli said, turning her face
towards the window and staring out.”

(ii) Although both the ideas mentioned in the poem about the end of the world are
hypothetical, the poet stresses that the world will either end in fire or in ice. Though
the poet thinks both ways to be destructive, yet he seems to favour the idea of the
destruction of the world in the fire a little more than that of in ice.
(ii)The elders in Goa are nostalgic about the good old Portuguese days and the
Portuguese loaves of bread. The Portuguese were very famous for their bread. Those
eaters of loaves might have vanished but the makers are still there. The mixers, the
moulders and those who bake the loaves still exist. Those age-old, time-tested
furnaces still continue to function.

Everybody else in the house is brave and the dragon is the only one who fears a lot.
The dragon had a very ferocious and frightening appearance but did not behave in an
aggressive manner. This made others think that he was a coward and thus he is called
the ‘cowardly dragon’
(¥) The point of controversy between Lomov and Natalya was the ownership over the
Oxen Meadows. Natalya said that her grandfather and great-grandfather owned the
land extended to Burnt Marsh, which meant that the Oxen Meadows were hers. But
Lomov argued that his aunt's grandmother had given the free use of the meadows to
the peasants of Natalya's father's grandfather for forty years, in return for which the
peasants had to make bricks for her.

(i) For some people, deception is a way to lead life easily, i.c., by changing name, by
making excuses, by making new way of making money etc. Anil was the most
trusting person. Hari Singh had ever met. But he took undue advantage of his trust.
He was a thief and couldn't be expected to be honest with Anil. He came to Anil with
a false identity. Anil had a blind faith in human nature. He employed him just out of
sympathy and compassion for him. He trusted him and ignored his misdeed. He
handed over all the financial transactions without any verification. In a way, he gave
him a chance to improve. Hari stole money and then came back with a change of
mind. Anil knew even this fact also, but said nothing. It made Hari Singh to decide to
leave the style of deception as a way of life. Living a simple and straight life over-
powered Hari's deceptive life. Finally, he opted for the simple life by educating
himself and becoming a clever, big and respectable man in future. It was very good
decision of Hari Singh

duped Horace Danby not even once could Horace make out that she was not the wife
of the house owner. The woman threatened to hand him over to the police and made
him break the safe. Meanwhile she kept standing away smoking a cigarette and
watched him do all time. There was no trace or fingerprint of that lady in the house.
She framed a story of forgetting the numbers and Horace fell into her trap. Horace
opened the safe gave her the jewels and went away. Thus without working hard, she
got all the jewels, with her smartness.
