What is ART?
Art comes from the Latin word AR mean – to join or
put together
Contemporary Art
Art that is produced at the present period in time.
Contemporary art includes and develops from
post-modern art, which is itself a successor to modern
art.
Integrative Art
Refers to the use of art in other disciplines, as in
psychology.
Philippine Art History
• Pre-Colonial Arts (Ethnic Arts)- arts are for ritual purposes or for everyday
use.
• Islamic Arts- Islamic art characterized by geometric designs and patterns
eliciting focus from the believers.
• Spanish Era- Art became handmaiden of religion, serving to propagate the
Catholic faith and thus support the colonial order at the same time.
• American Era- In this regime, commercial and advertising arts were
integrated into fine arts curriculum.
• Japanese Era- Since the Japanese advocated for the culture of East Asia,
preference was given to the indigenous art and traditions of the Philippines.
Philippine Art History
• Modern Era- Modern era in the Philippine Art began after World War II and
the granting of independence. Writers and artists posed the question of
national identity as the main theme of various art forms.
• Contemporary Art- Philippine Contemporary Art was an offshoot of social
realism brought about by Martial Law. Arts became expression of people’s
aspiration for just, free and sovereign society.
Classification of Art forms
Visual Arts
• Visual arts are those forms perceived by the eyes
• Including painting, sculpture and architecture
• Also called spatial arts because artwork produced under this genre
Graphic Arts
Examples: printing, painting, drawing, sketching, commercial art, mechanical
processes, computer graphics and photography
Plastic Arts- those visual arts that have length, width, and volume.
Examples: sculpture, architecture, landscape, architecture, city planning
design, theater design, industrial design, crafts and allied arts
Audio-visual Arts- those art forms that perceived by both ears and eyes. Also
called performing arts
Examples: music, dance, and drama, tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, farce,
melodrama
Literary Arts- are those presented in the written mode and intended to be read.
Examples: prose ( short stories, novels, essays and plays) poetry, narrative
poems, lyric poems and dramatic poems.
Division of Art Study
1. Aesthetic or Art Appreciation- the division of art study in which the
students learns to admire the artists, value highly different works of art, and
appreciate the role of art in society.
2. Art History- the division of art study in which the student acquires
knowledge of the artists, their, backgrounds, their masterpieces and their
significant contributions in various fields of art.
3. Art Production- division of art study in which the student learns to use his
creativity and apply his artistic knowledge and skills in producing his own
works of art.
4. Art Criticism- the division of art study in which the student learns to use
his judgment in evaluating different artworks based on the criteria set.
National Artists of the Philippines
The first recipient of NAA (National Artist Award) was Fernando
Amorsolo and was conferred the award posthumously.
Jose Maceda was an avant-grade composer musician and
ethnomusicologist and was proclaimed as National Artist for
Music in 1997
Oblation 1935
A sculpture work by classically trained sculptor Guillermo Tolentino
(awarded 1973) depicting a male nude with arms outstretched as a gesture of
sacrifice and freedom.
The Church of the Holy Sacrifice
recognized as National Historical landmark as well as a Cultural Treasure
by the National Historical Institute and by the National Museum.
