This document provides information about a personal development module on brain functions. It discusses identifying ways to improve brain functions through understanding different parts, processes, and functions of the brain. Learners are expected to discuss how understanding the brain can help thoughts, behavior, and feelings, and to develop a personal plan to enhance brain functions. The document includes a hemispheric dominance inventory for learners to determine if they are more right-brained or left-brained.

LET US GET STARTED!

Did you know that at one point in time, you and a dog, fish and bird had something very
much in common? You may be guessing that it was the fur, the scales or the beak. The truth is,
it was the most important structure of any higher order animal known as the brain

Believe it or not, the human brain was a complex and as advanced as that of a bird. If you
think that this happened only millions of years ago, then you are only in part correct. As a matter
of fact, it occurs right now all over the world and it happened to you when you were still in your
mother’s womb. Yes, at one point in time, you basically had a bird brain

The development of all sorts of organs occurred to you when you were still in your mother’s
womb. Slowly but surely, they all grew to become very important in your daily activities. They
mature into the structures in your adult brain that make life possible for you today. In this lesson,
we will focus on the brain’s hemisphere to help you improve your learning

Are you right-brained or left brained? Let us find out through the Hemisphere Dominance Inventory
below.

Hemispheric Dominance Inventory

Put a check mark to each item that applies to you.

A B
You are better with faces than names You are a very organized person
People have described you as “perceptive” In fact, you kind of love cleaning
If someone is mad at you, you can tell without them And nothing makes you happier than
having to say a word coming home and having everything
in its place
When planning a party you think about the bigger You like to think things through before
picture rather than smaller details making a decision
Actually you are a HUGE planner, you prefer to be And you’re really not into surprises or
spontaneous being spontaneous
You have been called out for daydreaming You’re really great at catching typos
And being easily distracted right now Before you buy something, you check
to make sure nothing’s wrong with it
You are daydreaming or getting distracted right You work best in a quiet space

So what if you are right-brained or left brained? Have you ever heard people describe
themselves as strictly “right brained or “left brained”? Of course, the left brainers would brag about
their math skills and the right brainers would tout about their creativity. The reason for this is
because each hemisphere provides a different set of functions, behaviors and controls. The right
hemisphere is often called the creative side of the brain, while the left hemisphere is the logical
or analytical side of the brain

Managing Anger is one of the most challenging emotions to handle. The first step in dealing with
it is like dealing with guilt. You must try to get at the fundamental source and tackle it. Even if
there is nothing you can do about the source of your anger, you can always find ways to manage
it with your feelings

Sharing stories is a powerful way to connect with other people. By sharing your own
personal story, you can connect with others who are dealing with the same challenges as you are.
