THE EFFECT OF TIKTOK ON THE LANGUAGE VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT OF
YOUTH IN BRGY, SAN ANTONIO 1, SANPABLO CITY
INTRODUCTION
Social media plays a significant role in our everyday lives. It may be used for
different purposes, such as gaining information, entertainment, as well as
education. As our world becomes more globalized and more technology-based,
social media evolves as well. Different apps have been made that impact most of
us in different ways. The more information we read or hear on social media, the
more it influences us as well as our vocabulary.
For the past two years, we have been in a pandemic. Tiktok has been one of the
most popular apps in the country. It is mostly used by young people nowadays.
Tiktok is an app that allows people to share videos of them dancing, singing,
acting, or lip-syncing as well as sharing their life stories. The growth of content
creators that share relevant stories and lessons partially influenced not only the
mindset of people but also the language vocabulary of the app's users. People
adapt more and learn new language that is beyond their knowledge as they watch
more videos, and they also learn new words from a specific TikTok content
creator. Especially in our country, more unfamiliar and non-existent words come
from those who make videos on TikTok. As a viewer, we can adapt to these new
words and languages and might use them in our daily lives, which can be classified
as slang words.
Tiktok can ruin and develop our language vocabulary at the same time; it just
depends on us. It depends on what kind of people we follow and what videos we
watch. It depends on us if we want to be influenced by them or not.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The present study focused on the effect of TikTok app on the Language
Vocabulary development of youths in Brgy. San Antonio, San Pablo City. The
researchers looked into the connection between TikTok and young people's
thinking as a result of the circumstances mentioned above.
This study aims to know more about how big TikTok can influence the
minds of people especially the teenagers and what effect would it give to us as an
individual.
As the year goes by the rapid growth of what we called “TikTokers” are
now taking over the social media with their different contents.
This application started in September 2016 and was founded by the
Chinese technology company ByteDance. By that time, the influence of TikTok has
gone wild year by year and the popularity of different people is overwhelming.
In the present, if we dig deeper from the contents of this application we
can notice that a lot of people already used the app to share information’s about
different things. There are content creators that teach languages, arts and crafts,
instrumental skills, and many more. With that we can say that it is a little bit
helpful for us because we can learn a lot of things in this application and not only
for entertainment.

A close examination of Figure 1 reveals that the youth’s factors are age and
sex which shall serve as the input. On the other hand, the effect of Tiktok on the
language vocabulary of youth in Brgy, San Antonio 1, San Pablo City can be
identified and it will serve as the output known as the outcome of the research
survey and presentation findings.
The study, therefore, seeks empirical support that tiktok can and able to
influence the language vocabulary development of its young users.
HYPOTHESIS
Null Hyphothesis (Ho):
There is no significant effect of tiktok on the language vocabulary
development youth
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha):
There is a significant effect of tiktok on the language on the language
vocabulary development of youth.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to seek the answer of the following:
1. The profile of youth in Brgy, San Antonio 1, San Pablo City
1.1. Age
1.2. Sex
2. How much hours do they spend in watching tiktok?
3. How does the language used in tiktok influence their vocabulary?
4. What is the importance of Tiktok in their daily lives as youths?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study was conducted to determine how Tiktok can affect the Language
Vocabulary of youth in Brgy, San Antonio 1, San Pablo City.
The results of the study will benefit the following:
Youth. This study will immediately assist young people since it may raise their
awareness and inspire them to be more critical and careful about what they
believe in terms of choosing a good application that will help them to be more
knowledgeable.
Social media Advocates. The findings of this study will give advocates important
knowledge about how their content affects viewers as well as what is good and
bad as they spread information.
Community. This study raises awareness in the community about the effects of
tiktok on the language vocabulary, and through this they will know how to handle
and respond if there is a problem that may arise.
Future Researchers. Future student researchers could use this study as a guide.
They can utilize the study's findings as a bridge to look into related topics.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
This research entitled “The Effect of tiktok on the language vocabulary of
youth in Brgy, San Antonio 1 San Pablo City” aimed to determine how social
media specifically Tiktok app influenced the vocabulary of youth. The participants
of this study is randomly selected male and female ages from 15-16 years old who
uses tiktok and a citizen of Brgy, San Antonio 1 San Pablo City Laguna. Other
people who are not resident of Brgy, San Antonio 1 San Pablo City Laguna are not
included in the scope of this study.
