Natalie: You're kidding me! I have your backpack.

Prepositions of Time

You use the prepositions of time in, on, at to say when an event happens.

Look at the table below: In, On, At

Preposition Use Example

in period The meeting starts in five minutes.


I come to Paris in June every year.

on days and dates The exam is on May 9th.

at a specific time Class starts at 9 a.m.

Asking and Telling Time

You use what to ask a person about the time.

You can use the Wh- question word when.

There are different ways to say the time. Look at the chart below.

noon 12 o'clock in the afternoon. It's noon. I'm hungry.

midnight 12 o'clock at night. It's midnight. I have to go


to sleep.

a.m. use this to talk about time between School starts at 9 a.m.
midnight and noon.

p.m. use this to talk about time between noon I have dinner at 8 p.m.
and midnight.

o'clock use this to tell the hour It's 5 o'clock.

When you ask and tell the time, you often use the present simple tense with the verb to be.

Examples:
• Ann : What time is it?
Tom : It's 5 p.m.
• Ann : When is the meeting?
Tom : It's at 10 a.m.
