LESSON
Principles of Communication (7 Cs)
1. Principle of Clarity
The idea or message to be communicated should be clearly spelt out. It should be
worded in such a way that the receiver understands the same thing which the
sender wants to convey. There should be no ambiguity in the message. It should be
kept in mind that the words do not speak themselves but the speaker gives them
the meaning. A clear message will evoke the same response from the other party. It
is also essential that the receiver is conversant with the language, inherent
assumptions, and the mechanics of communication.
2. Principle of Correctness
The messages should be correct, authentic and accurate. Incorrect transmission
will lead to incorrect action. While corresponding with outsiders, incorrect message
can affect company’s goodwill and public relations.
3. Principle of Concreteness
Concreteness means being specific, definite, and vivid communication. One should
use denotative words rather than connotative words. The principle of concreteness
ensures supply of specific facts to the reader or listener. It increases the likelihood
of the message being interpreted in the way it is originally intended. In other words,
there is no room for misinterpretation.
4. Principle of Completeness
Complete information makes communication effective. Incomplete messages create
gaps that may be filled by people according to their individual perceptions. The
message is incomplete unless it specifies how much increase in production is
desired, how many hours of overtime have to be put in and for what time period.
Information is complete when it answers five W’s— what, when, why, where and
who. Completeness of information increases the effectiveness of communication.
5. Principle of Courteousness
Politeness and courtesy are important contributors to effective communication.
Thanking the other person for a favor, acknowledging his action or response,
apologizing for a mistake, avoiding negative expressions and using empathy are
some of the ways which can make communication courteous and effective.
6. Principle of Coherence
The messages that will be sent should be logical and that is why coherent
communication is important. The message involves certain ideas and thoughts and
thus when they are coherent than only they are able to convey the main idea of the
message. All the points mentioned should be relevant to the topic and connected.
7. Principle of Conciseness
Though all details should be included in the message, the sender should be as brief
as possible. Readers and listeners prefer reading and listening to short notices
rather than lengthy details. Long messages become boring and may lose attention
of the receiver. Simple, short and crisp sentences should be used to make the
message effective.
ACTIVITY
Direction: Get a partner. Write a short script to the following scenarios. Determine what
principle of communication is utilized. Present the output to the class afterwards.
Scenario 1: Your mother is asking you to do the household chores.
Scenario 2: Friends talking about the effects of COVID-19 to different societal aspects.
WRAP–UP
As we study about the seven principles of communication, we are reminded of the
importance of effective communication as it bridges the gap between individuals and
groups through flow of information and understanding between them adhering to the
discussed principles.
With that, write on your notebook which part of the lesson you find the most vital.
VALUING
The main cause of conflict and dissatisfaction is misunderstanding which can be
removed through effective communication. Adhering to the seven principles of
communication shall make communication effective, minimize the human relations
problems and increase the overall efficiency either in an organization or relationship.
