Compute the following objectives:
a) Draw the histogram of speeds.
b) Draw the cumulative frequency curve and find the values
of (i) median speed, (ii) modal speed, and (iii) 15 th, 85th and
98th percentile speeds.
c) Mean speed
d) Standard deviation of speed values
e) Coefficient of variation of the speeds
f) Standard Error (SE) of speed values
g) Range of speed at which the mean speed lies within 95%
confidence, and
h) The size of the sample at which the SE is restricted to 0.50
km/ hr

2 The owner of a parking garage located in a CBD has observed
that 20% of those wishing to park are turned back every day
during the open hours of 8 a. m. to 6 p. m. because of lack of
parking spaces. An analysis of data collected at the garage
indicates that 60% of those who park are commuters, with an
average parking duration of 9 hours, and the remaining are Apply CO1-CO6
shoppers, whose average parking duration is 2 hours. If 20%
of those who cannot park are commuters and the rest are
shoppers, and a total of 200 vehicles currently park daily in the
garage, determine the number of additional spaces required to
meet the excess demand. Assume parking efficiency is 0.90.
3 The field survey of an existing roundabout is as follows:

Apply CO1-CO6

Figure: Rotary details schematic diagram

Average entry width of the North approach = 10.40 m;
Average entry width of the East approach = 11.00 m;
Average entry width of the South approach = 11.20 m;
Average entry width of the West approach = 11.40 m.
Draw a sketch showing the inflow and outflow of traffic and
determine the individual capacities of the weaving sections
and the capacity of the rotary. Write your comments on the
results obtained.
4 The frequency/contingency table (cross tabulation) for two Apply CO1-CO6
independent variables is given below. The accident data
observed in a year is obtained from a District State Highway
Accident Records file. Find out whether the road safety
improvements are effective or not based on the results
obtained from a chi-square test.

Hints for solving problem:
 Compute the expected value of accident type using the
formula presented below:
( ∑ Accidents of all types )ith Year x ( ∑ Accident by type ) ith Year
Ei =
∑ ( Accidents before Improvement + After Improvement)
 Formula for computing χ 2 value:

( Observed i −Expected i )
χ computed =∑

i =1 Expected i
 Degree of Freedom = (Number of rows in recorded data
table – 1) x (Number of columns in recorded data table – 1)
 Contrast between calculated Chi-square value and critical
Chi-square value from the statistical table
χ 2calculated > χ 2critical : Null−hypothesis rejected
2 2
χ calculated < χ critical : Null −hypothesis accepted
 Null-hypothesis is a con-statement which is written in
objective form of the problem asked to be analyzed for
change.
