7 Reasons Why You Should Travel Alone At Least Once In

Your Life
1. (G) You will meet amazing people.

While traveling with friends or a significant other can be a lot of fun, traveling solo for a certain
amount of time can prove to be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do because of the great
people you’ll meet.

When we travel with friends or a partner, we tend to stick to that little group of familiar faces and
even though you’ll meet new people, the dynamics and interactions won’t be as deep and fulfilling.
While you’re on your own on the road, you’re much more eager to meet travel buddies, team up
with other travelers and generally reach out more in order to socialize.

2. (B) The overwhelming sense of absolute freedom.

When you travel on your own and you start meeting people and making awesome friends, you’ll
probably team up with travel buddies and end up expanding your travel plans. You’ll probably
change your plans once you hear about that amazing waterfall, that incredible desert beach, the
opportunity to bungee jump from a high bridge, or taste a special delicacy you’ll only find off the
beaten track.

When you’re traveling, you’re open to change and you’ll welcome it with open arms. The great
thing is that you don’t have to fit into a group’s agenda, give explanations or disappoint anyone,
you can follow your rhythm, desires and move like the wind.

3. (E) Traveling alone challenges your fears and insecurities

This is a big one, especially if it’s your first solo experience. I remember the first time I traveled
when I was 18 and moved to London on my own for 3 months to be an au pair and live with a local
family. I was terrified of the unknown, but if I would have surrendered to that fear, I would have
never get to know the strong, courageous and adventurous side of me. I was scared, but I did it
anyways and by the 3rd day, I was really proud of myself. From then on I never let fear stop me. 16
years and many adventures later, I still have a little voice inside my head, asking: “What if
something goes wrong?” “What if you get into trouble?” This is normal and perfectly human; fear
exists for our own protection and boosts our awareness. But we shouldn’t let it control our lives.

Safety can be a great comfort, but common sense is the key. Read and research a lot before you
travel, check out hostel reviews, and research feedback from other travelers in forums and blogs.
Respect the local culture and I guarantee you’ll be fine.

4. (F) Fall in love.

Everyone wants to find their better half and much is said about failed relationships while on the
road. It doesn’t have to be like that! We find love when we meet someone who shares our interests,
dreams, and goals. While traveling solo you’ll meet so many people from all walks of life that
falling in love might just happen. Whether it will be a great summer love or end up at the altar, no
one knows, but there are many people out there with amazing stories.

If you already have a partner, this time away can boost your passion and once you’re back, you’ll
appreciate each other’s company more.

5. (C ) You can take the time to nurture (puoselėti) yourself.

If you have a stressful life back home, either studying hard or working too much, traveling on your
own can be the time to take some time off and nurture yourself.

Whether you’re a backpacker traveling cheap or if the sky is the limit as far as your budget goes,
you can use this time to pamper yourself. Indulge in rich and delicious local meals which will boost
your energy and health, take long walks on the beach by sunrise, or get a massage. Do some yoga
and relax a lot. Enjoy all the wonderful things you deserve, and understand that happiness is a birth
right, not a privilege.

6. ( D) You’ll have a chance to recreate yourself and be who you want to be.

While traveling solo, you can leave your grumpy, tired old self behind and start to be a new you.
Explore parts of your personality you are not very comfortable or familiar with. When on the road,
you might be challenged by unexpected factors and be positively surprised how well you respond to
them. Empower yourself by unleashing (paleisti nuo saito) the wonderful, irresistible and intelligent
person you are, but whom you’ve neglected in your everyday routine.

7. ( I ) You can finally take time to leave everything else behind.

Just disconnect from the world for a while. Turn off your mobile, “forget” to check you emails for a
few days… don’t think about the bills, the responsibilities, the duties and problems. Leave them
behind.

Some of the most intense creative times or the ones where we find the solutions for all our problems
are actually the moments when we disconnect and stop worrying. Have you ever tried to remember
a name or a date and you just can’t spit it out, but after you quit trying it pops out? It’s the same for
the rest of life. Sometimes our brains need to get rid of old thoughts in order to be able to create
space for new ones, better ones. So just disconnect yourself from everything and you might be
amazed by how fresh you’ll feel once you get back home.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Traveling
Alone
About to take that big trip? Considering going solo? Worried about the idea of traveling alone?
After traveling solo twice in my life, first for a couple of months in Europe years ago and now
traveling solo around the world for almost a year, I’d like to throw my two cents in on some
advantages and disadvantages of traveling alone, how to make it successful and some things to
consider during your travels.

As you’re planning out that trip abroad, you may want to bring along a friend or family member for
the experience. Unfortunately, not everyone has friends and family that share the same desire to
travel abroad as you do or they may simply not be in a position where they are able to do so. This is
especially true when people don’t want to give up a current job or family obligations which is
understandable. The commitment it takes to quit that job, take a leave of absence or make other
arrangements to plan either a short month or even a year off can be a frightening thought! It also
takes discipline in order to save up the money needed although even though RTW (Round The
World) travel doesn’t have to be expensive!

In either case, you may simply find yourself having to commit to a solo travel experience if you
really want to go. However, I am here to tell you that it isn’t lonely as you might think. You may be
traveling solo, but you’ll never be alone! During my RTW (Round The World) trip, out of any
given 30 days in a month, I usually only found myself traveling alone about 2 or 3 days at a time.
Typically, this was when I was traveling from one city or country to the next after I split off from
friends I met in the last city or town I was in.

Advantages of Traveling Alone

If you were to ask me whether I would choose to travel with a friend or go solo on my next
adventure, I would tell you I’d go solo all day long. Sure, I wouldn’t mind having someone to go
along with but the fact is, traveling solo affords you more freedom to do what you want, when you
want and for how long you want to do it. There are never any disagreements on where you want to
travel to or how long you want to stay. You are always free to decide your complete travel route and
itinerary.

And there are other advantages! By traveling solo, you’ll likely meet many more people along the
way than if you were traveling with a friend. This is mainly due to the fact that you’ll be much more
apt to make the initiative to meet other travelers and locals along your journey.

Obviously hostels can offer the easiest way in which to meet others but there are many other ways
too. You can network through Couchsurfing communities for the particular city you are in and
attend any events or meet ups that may be taking place. You can volunteer in organizations and also
join tour groups with others. You are also bound to meet others while en route to your destinations
on planes, trains and buses. I almost never had issues meeting others as a solo backpacker and the
few times I did, I simply networked through the Couchsurfing community and other sites such as
Lonely Planet that allow you to find and connect with fellow travelers that may be in your area.

Another advantage of traveling alone is the fact if you really want some time to yourself, you’re
free to do so at anytime. Getting tired of the hostels scene? No problem, just check yourself into a
guesthouse or private hotel room for a couple of days. Want to take a break from the hustle and
bustle of city life? No worries, just head to the nearest beach and laze around for a while. It’s easy
to take time out for yourself while traveling solo and this may even been the one reason you decided
to take this trip in the first place!

So really, you can see that going solo on your trip can give you the best of both worlds… the option
to meet new people and socialize whenever you want, the freedom to decide when you want some
alone time and also to set your own travel plans and itinerary. And if you are still feeling
apprehensive about it, just keep this in mind. Once you meet up with some people who you mesh
well with, chances are you’ll end up traveling with them for days or even weeks on end. And if at
anytime things aren’t working out, you can always just head in the opposite direction and go your
own way.

Disadvantages of Traveling Alone

There are a few notable disadvantages of traveling alone to consider. The first being the fact that
you won’t be able to split costs with someone else as often as you could if you had a permanent
travel mate. This would be the case in those situations where there may be no cheap hostels in town
and instead, you may only come across guesthouses or hotels which will cost you more. Another
situation may be when you just have to pay for that cab by yourself to get where you’re going or
need to pay for something else that you could easily split if you had someone traveling with you.

Another disadvantage is not being able to share all your travel experiences with someone else. Sure,
you’ll share most of them with fellow travelers you meet along the way but when you finally make
it home, it can be nice to be able to look back on your trip with your travel partner and reflect on all
the experiences you had together.

And lastly, for those rough travel days (and there will be some), when you’re tired or sick and
you’ve got that map out and all you want to do is figure out which street to turn down or how to get
from point A to B, etc. it can be nice to have that friend by your side to help navigate and to simply
share in the experience. As mentioned, most often you’ll find yourself traveling with others from
one place to the next but the most likely times you may find yourself solo are the times when you
first enter into a country since those last friends you were traveling with may not have had the same
travel route as you.

So I hope to have alleviated (sumažinti) some fears or anxiety you may have about traveling alone as
well as helped you make the decision to blaze your own path. Clearly there are both advantages and
disadvantages of traveling alone but from someone who has done plenty of solo travel and had an
excellent time in the process, the pros definitely outweigh the cons!

Advantages of Travelling with a Companion

I guess everyone would like to set off for a lifetime journey with best friend, soul mate, someone
who we can understand, have fun with and rely all the time. However, whether you travel with your
colleague, best mate, girlfriend/ boyfriend, someone who you barely know or the random person
you have just met, one thing is for sure- TRAVELLING WITH A COMPANION IS AWESOME!
Nobody can deny it. It has its advantages and disadvantages but we all know it’s great. Let’s focus
on benefits it brings us (assuming that your companion is not a troublesome person and you can
stand each other) :) :

1. (G) It’s safer and less stressful.

It’s good to have someone with you who can watch your backpack when you want to use the
toilet, find the way back home when you get lost or help you in case of any emergency
situations.  Secondly, the feeling of having someone by your side makes you calm and less
stressful about many things (safety and organising stuff).

2. (E) More fun.

Nothing like having someone who has the same sense of humor, looks at things the same way
as you do and enjoys travelling as you. You can together share the beautiful moments during
your travels, crash jokes together, experience the same things in the same or different way and
support each other. It’s much more interesting and exciting when you have the chance to share
something with someone while on your road. Finally, there is always someone who you can
shout at when you are angry, complain about locals or cry on his/ her shoulder when you miss
home :).

3. (B) Less expensive.

You companion can share the expenses with you. You can stay in one room and share the bill,
buy a dinner and have it together,  etc. It’s good to travel with someone who has the same or
similar approach to travel expenses as you do so you can support each other without having any
arguments and it’s easier to meet half-way in terms of compromises.

4. (F) It’s convenient.

You have a buddy who can carry some of your gear (good for girls :)) and take some photos of
you when you want (what I like the most:)).
5. (D) No loneliness.

Having a companion by your side when travelling means less moments of loneliness. You don’t
think about it unless you get left in the middle of nowhere, far away from your friends and family.
Then you wish to have someone with you :).

To sump up, travelling with someone is the best option for someone who easily gets homesick, is
an inexperienced traveller or just social animal. We might sometimes feel like being on our own,
having a social break and enjoy the scenery with nobody behind our back but at the end of the day
you have much more fun when being with someone, especially for a long run.
