• Substance abuse can endanger

health, safety, functionality of
societies and social
relationships. When this
happens, it is labeled as a social
problem because it interferes
with the well-being of the
individual and/or societies in
which they live. The field of
study becomes relevant in the
sense that, there's
implementations of different
interventions that can be used to
curb social problems that falls
under drug use.
• The conflict theory highlights
that social problems occurs due
to power differentiation and
class struggles, in response
drugs and substance use is
happening as a response to
inequality especially that which
is perpetuated by the capitalist
system. When individuals are
alienated from employment and
access to education etc they turn
to drugs as an escape from the
frustration(rapid increase of the
use of illicit drugs by youths )
•Symbolic interactionist theory
was more relevant during
replacement in identifying how
individuals end up getting
involved with drugs.
5

Interactions with others results

in learned and accepted
behaviour of drug use and
certain lebels that are placed on
drug users can be embraced and
internalized as well as
'pleasurable experiences' that
are placed on drug use.

• The bulk of rehabilitation

work was psychologically
driven and the student used
different psychological theories
during wrl period.
• The student improvised
qualitative research that is
collecting and analyzing non
numerical data to understand the
concept of drug and substance
abuse as well as gathering in-
depth insights about this
scourge through the clients and
referrals' opinions and
experiences. As a case
manager, the student
implemented qualitative
research methods as
observations and recording
environmental triggers heard
and encountered in detailed
field notes.
Interviews also worked as the
most crucial tool in field visits
through one on one
6

conversation. The student was

equipped with a guideline of a
set of questionnaires to ask
clients (drug and substance
abuse individuals). This
research tool was utilized by the
student in obtaining meaningful
insights, detailed descriptions of
people's experiences, feelings
and perceptions in relation to
drug and substance use as well
as mental health issues.
More so, the writer
implemented procedures of
ethical behavior in qualitative
research and that intertwined
with one of organizational
principles that is upholding
confidentiality and privacy.
