Fideldia - Regenerate of Polluted Open Drainage at City of Balanga Bataan

This document summarizes a student project to regenerate polluted open drainage canals in the city of Balanga, Bataan, Philippines. It provides background information on plastic bottle and grease/oil buildup in drainage canals in Manila. It also shows figures on the amount of waste collected daily from drainage canals in different cities of Metro Manila. Additionally, it notes that 98 of 237 barangays in Bataan have been identified as flood-prone areas where over 84,000 families reside based on a pre-disaster risk assessment.

Floods are the most common type of natural disaster and occur when
water floods normally dry land. Floods are often caused by heavy
rains, rapid snowmelt, storm surges from tropical cyclones, or
tsunamis in coastal areas. Drainage systems may not be able to
handle the amount of water that accumulates on surrounding
surfaces. Especially if the surrounding surface is saturated with large
amounts of water. In this case, even a small amount of additional
precipitation can cause flooding. Clogged drains can cause major
flooding problems. Clogged mains are the biggest threat to sewage
clogging toilets and drains throughout your home. These types of
floods are usually localized but can still cause significant damage.
Cities flood as a result of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems can
significantly contribute to the decrease of urban flooding, but they
are not a remedy for the issue.

Infrastructure and equipment, and poor implementation of waste

management systems can be the main causes of flooding.
Inadequate design of drainage channels and structures, poor
maintenance of drainage facilities, and clogging with debris
carried by floods cause cities to become submerged.
