Introduction (5 minutes)
Tell students that today they will be learning about sentences. Explain: “A sentence tells about
something and has several words in it.”
Provide examples of sentences and non-sentences. (Sentence example: “The cat is big and orange.” Non-
sentence example: “cat”).
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling (5 minutes)
Ask students to listen for all of the words in a sentence as you say them aloud.
Model saying a sentence aloud and clapping for each word in the sentence.
Count each of the words in the sentence aloud and share with students the final number of words in each
sentence.
Explain that each word in a sentence is separated by a space and that this makes reading each word in
the sentence easier.
Point out that the first word in the sentence begins with an uppercase letter. Point to the end of the
sentence and explain that a sentence always ends with a period, exclamation point (to show excitement),
or a question mark (to show a question is being asked).
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Invite students to turn to a partner and share a sentence.
Ask a few students to share out their sentences.
Write up a few of the sentences on the board or on chart paper.
Tell students that you will be reading each sentence aloud and they should clap for each word in the
sentence.

Display the Write and Count worksheet on the board.
Demonstrate how to cut out the pictures and glue them next to the matching sentence. Model clapping
for each word and then counting all of the words in each sentence, recording the total number in the box.
Independent working time (15 minutes)
Pass out the Write and Count worksheets and have students complete them independently.
If students finish early, have them complete the Make and Count and Tons of Words worksheets.
Circulate around the room and provide support to students as needed.
Differentiation
Support:
Gather a small group of students together and repeat the exercise in the guided instruction portion of the
lesson, this time having students record the number of words in each sentence on an index card.
Enrichment:
Have advanced students write their own sentences and record how many words are in each sentence.
Ask students to write sentences with a predetermined number of words (ex. 3, 4, 5).
Assessment (5 minutes)
During the independent work portion of the lesson, assess whether students are able to accurately write
a sentence and record the number of words within the sentence.
Review and closing (5 minutes)
Close by saying, “Knowing how many words are in a sentence can help us make sure that our sentence is
telling a little story, and that it isn’t just one word, like cat!”
