Laboratory Activity No. 5 Angle of Incidence and Angle of Reflection

This laboratory activity document provides instructions for an experiment to demonstrate the law of reflection - that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. Students are asked to shine a laser pointer at various angles of incidence on a mirror and measure the corresponding angle of reflection, using a protractor. They then compare the angle pairs and are to make a general statement that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

LABORATORY ACTIVITY NO. 5

ANGLE OF INCIDENCE AND ANGLE OF REFLECTION

Materials:
mirror, laser pointer, bond paper, protractor, baby powder

Procedure:

1. Position the mirror perpendicular to a paper lying flat on a surface.

2. Shine a ray of light on the mirror using a laser pointer. Take note of the angle that the light ray makes
with the 90-degree mark of the illustrated protractor. This angle is the angle of incidence. (Note: You
may use powder in moderation to see the light ray clearly.)

3. Find the light ray that bounces off the mirror. It is called the reflected ray. Measure the angle that the
reflected ray makes with the 90-degree mark of the illustrated protractor. This angle is the angle of
reflection. Refer to the figure below.

4. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for four other angles of incidence.

Angle of Incidence Angle of Reflection

5. Compare the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection for each angle pair. Make a general
statement about these angle pairs.
