Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each
lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests.
And read the instructions carefully before performing each task

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Third Quarter Dig holes
Week 5

MELC : Digging of holes for planting

Objective/s:

1. Dig holes based on crop requirements.

2. Apply basal fertilizer based on recommended amount.

What I Know

I. TRUE OR FALSE: Write the word TRUE if the statement is correct and write
FALSE if the statement is incorrect. Write your answer on your answer
sheet.

1. Foliar application is a method of application by which the fertilizer is

applied over the surface of the land. It may not be harrowed, plowed
or disked into the soil.

2. In fertigating, the fertilizer is being dissolved and mixed with water and
applied with the use of sprinkler.

3. In broadcasting application, we apply dissolved fertilizer in between hills

of a Plant by.

4. Dig holing is done before land preparation to ensure the lay-out are
accurate.

5. Fertilizer computation is important to make sure the exact amount of

fertilizer to be applied in the farm.

1
What is It

This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to

conduct activities related to land preparation and planting of agricultural
crops. This unit also includes proper handling of seeds/seedlings/saplings for
planting and transplanting, proper use of tools and equipment, conduct land
preparation and field lay-out.

In your previous lesson, you have learned about field lay-outing.

1. What are the different plant lay-outing?

2. How can we relate lay-outing in our daily lives in this pandemic
time?

The following are your guide to help you understand the digging of holes
before planting.

Dig Properly Sized Holes

The size of the hole you dig for your plant is critically important. A hole that is
too small could suffocate the roots or hinder plant growth. In the case of a
seed, a hole that is too deep could prevent the seed from germinating at all.

Digging the holes

Hoe an area of about 1 square metre around the planting holes. The area
should be cleared of all vegetation to eliminate competition for nutrients and
water.

Dig the planting holes. Holes are required for all containerized plants and for
big bare-rooted seedlings. The digging can be done at the same time as
planting or some weeks in advance. If holes are dug before the rainy season,
labour demand will not interfere with the agricultural season and the actual
planting work will be faster.

Fertilizer Computation
To supply a certain amount of plant nutrients, determine the
amount of fertilizer to be applied per hectare based on the
composition of the fertilizer materials to be used. Here are some
examples on how to determine the amount of fertilizer.
Example:

Compute the fertilizer needed in 5 hectares lowland farm of

Juan, the recommended rate from Bureau of soil are 90-80-50.
Expressed these fertilizers in kg complete fertilizer (46-0-0), nitrogen ( 0-
0-60) and Superphosphate (0-20-0).
Formula:

Weight of fert. Material = RR kg/has x 100 x area

Given:
Recommended rate (RR) 90-80-50
Fertilizer: a) 46-0-0

b) 0-0-60
c) 0-20-0

Methods of Fertilizer Application

As a general rule, a fertilizer material should be placed in the soil in

such a way that the plant can absorb it. This involves not only different
zones of placement but also the time with respect to the age of the plant
the fertilizer is to be applied.
1. Broadcasting – It is a method through which the fertilizer is applied
over the surface of the land. It may not be harrowed, plowed or
disked into the soil. This method is usually practiced in rice field,
pastures, and lawns.

4
2. Side dressing – Fertilizer material is placed in or in between the
rows of crops like vegetables or
corn or placing around the plant
Crops, side dressing may be
done simultaneously with
cultivation. The purpose of side
dressing is to ensure availability of
plant food nutrients, particularly
nitrogen during the critical
growth periods when plant are taking up nutrients rapidly.
3. Band/ row/ or localized
placements – Fertilizer material is
applied in bands to one or both
sides of the seed or plant. On row
crops, the fertilizer is placed in
bands or strips on one or both
sides of the row, about 2 inches
away from and below the seeds.

4. Foliar application – The

chemical is mixed with water
and sprayed to the foliage of
the plants.

5. Applied with the seed –

Fertilizer is broadcast together with the seeds or the seeds are
coated with fertilizer by means of an adhesive such as cellofas or
gum Arabic.

6. Fertigation– This involves

dissolving the fertilizer
materials in water and then
apply it with the use of
sprinkler.
