7.final Exam.

Genetically modified crops developed by Philippine researchers include golden rice and GMO corn. Golden rice was approved to help address vitamin A deficiency and contains beta-carotene providing 50% of daily vitamin A needs from one cup of rice. GMO corn adoption increased Philippine corn exports through higher yields and reduced pesticide use, benefiting low-income farmers. While some have safety concerns, studies found golden rice and GMO corn to be as safe as conventional crops. Overall, genetically modified crops developed in the Philippines positively impact health, trade, and farmer incomes.

Introduction:

An organism produced through genetic engineering is referred to as a GMO, or

genetically modified organism. When we say genetic engineering it defines as a
procedure that modifies an organism's DNA using technology developed in laboratories.
It mixed genes from bacteria, mammals, plants, and viruses in a way that neither nature
nor traditional crossbreeding techniques had never done before, suggesting that it may
have involved gene transfer from other organisms. People are aware of the significance
of agriculture to farmers because it is their source of daily sustenance.

The abundant natural resources of the Philippines, which include agricultural

output, are well known. Rice, coconuts, corn, sugarcane, bananas, pineapples, and
mangoes are the main agricultural exports. Due to the growth of science and technology
throughout the world, there have been improvements in everything over the years that
have made its job simpler and more hi-tech. Why is it crucial that GMOs be used in
agriculture, then?

The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) benefits both producers and
consumers in specific ways. By giving protection to a particular illness or pest,
enhanced plants, for instance, could at least in the beginning assist safeguard crops,
insuring quality food production. It also aids many people in making a living because of
the advantages from this that will provide the outcomes they want for from their work as
providers and workers. However, there are also downsides when it is used in nature
because it contains a chemical that will impact the lives of everybody who utilizes it or
anyone who consumes it.

Therefore, the researcher aims to understand the impact of genetically modified

organisms preserved by Philippines researchers.

According to Baragona, S. (2019) In the Philippines, regulators have given their

permission to a kind of rice that has been genetically modified to fight vitamin A
deficiency. Supporters claim that "Golden Rice" could treat a disease that, according to
the World Health Organization, kills up to 250,000 children globally each year and blinds
twice that number. It is the first genetically modified organism (GMO) that has received
approval from developing-nation food safety experts and is intended to address a public
health issue.

Golden Rice is just as safe as regular rice, according to a statement made on

Wednesday by the Philippine Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Plant Industry. The
grain is now free of any safety concerns, according to regulators in the US, Canada,
Australia, and New Zealand. With most of the research, testing, and development for
golden rice occurring there, the Philippines have been taking the lead. The road to
getting this rice, however, has not been simple, and in some ways, the discussion has
turned into the same one over genetically modified foods that has been going on for the
previous two decades.

Golden rice, a short-grain rice variety engineered genetically to contain beta-

carotene, was created for the first time in 1999 in Switzerland. But the rice has faced a
long and difficult road to federal approval. The Philippines became the first nation to
approve golden rice this week, according to a government announcement. Golden rice
is said to be a potentially life-saving invention because it can provide almost 50% of the
required daily intake of vitamin A in only one cup of rice, stated by Nosowitz, D. (2021)

Moreover, Beltran, M. (2021) stated that planting is expected in several regions

during the wet cropping season of 2022, according to the agriculture department, who
described Golden Rice as a milestone for nutrition in the nation. According to IRRI,
vitamin A insufficiency affects about 1 in 5 kids in the Philippines' poorest communities.
Authorities in Bangladesh are also doing a final examination of Golden Rice. Vitamin A
helps to maintain healthy skin and eyes, and a lack of it can lead to issues like difficulty
seeing in low light.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have already been thoroughly

investigated and analyzed by famous scientists in the fields of agriculture and genetic
engineering. Despite this, a number of issues, particularly regarding their effects, have
been brought up in relation to GMOs. These worries include "genetic contamination,"
safe human consumption, and potential detrimental economic and environmental effects
of GMOs in the Philippines.

Growers of genetically modified (GM) corn in the Philippines, even low-income

households, have benefited financially from doing it again. Conrow, J. (2021) stated that
the greater production of GMO crops and the decreased use of pesticides let farmers
earn more money. GM corn has the potential to double or triple the national average
produce for non-GM corn, which is generally just 3 metric tons per hectare. Since
adopting GMO corn, the Philippines has been able to export corn feed due to increased
rates and increased harvests.

Additionally, the crop offers an efficient and environmentally friendly way for all of
the world's impoverished maize farmers to enhance yields and reduce pesticide use,
thereby enhancing their lives and reducing poverty. Isaac, N (2019)

As a result, the genetically modified crops developed by Filipino researchers

have an effect on everyone's lives, particularly of the farmers and consumers. Due to
improved yields and higher-quality harvests since adopting (GMO) corn, the Philippines
have been able to export corn. Additionally, there is golden rice, which has a positive
impact on someone's life because it helps people to fight childhood malnutrition. In other
words, GMO produced by the Philippines researchers are better for the health for
individual because they have less pesticide use and more nutritional content. They
might also be less expensive for farmers to cultivate, allowing for better prices.
