Globalization - Synthesis
Globalization - Synthesis
Since the beginning of human history, globalization has already begun about 60,000 years ago. The
first movement of people out of Africa into other parts of the world. Traveling short or long distances,
migrants, merchants, and others have delivered their ideas, customs, products to new lands. According
to many scholars, globalization started with Columbus voyage to the New World in 1492. Globalization
before refers to a phenomenon began with the earliest human migratory routes, or with Genghis khans
invasion, or travel across the Silk Road. Later on defined as "The compression of the world and the
intensification of the consciousness of the world as a whole." Currently, the term globalization is known
as the interconnectedness and integrations of countries which involves the movement of people,
products, goods and services with less restrictions across borders.
Globalization in ancient International Trading System started in Silk Road. Silk Road is the oldest
known international trade route. A network of pathways that spanned China to Middle East and Europe
between 50 B.C.E and 250 C.E. In 1571, Galleon Trade were established to open the transportation
overseas from Manila in the Philippines and Acapulco in Mexico.
International trade has been part of the world economy for thousand of years. Despite this long
history, the importance of foreign trade was modest until the beginning of the 19th century- the sum of
worldwide exports and imports never exceeded 10% of global output before 1800.
Then around 1820 things started to change quickly. Around that time, technological advances and
political liberalism triggered what we know today as the first wave of globalization.
From a historical perspective, there have been two waves of globalization. The first wave started in the
19th century, and came to an end with the beginning of the First World War. The second wave started
after the Second World War and is still continuing.
As globalization increases rapidly, the fast interchanging world can either unify or divide the globe.
While modernized technologies outrages today, the world is slowly damaging. Globalization increased
greenhouse gas remission, ocean acidification, deforestation, climate change, and the introduction of
invasive species all work to reduce biodiversity around the globe. Family disruption and social domestic
violence are increasing from developing countries. But those who decide to take on international
expansion find several benefits of globalization. Including:
Globalization plays important role in major aspects of activities around the globe. Such as: health,
education, transportation, information and technology, business, economic growth and trade, and
nature.
Health - Globalization increases medical access for people and countries that may not have access or
may not be able to afford care. It also increases the worlds knowledge and allow for collaboration
between nations.
Education - Globalization enhances the students ability to acquire and utilize knowledge. Globalization
enhances the ability of learners to access, assess, adopt and apply knowledge to think independently to
exercise appropriate judgment and to collaborate with others to make sense of new situations.
Transportation - The traffic volume growth increases the transport companies revenues, slowly
increases operating costs, and reduces the cost of transportation, which has a positive impact amount of
profit and profitability.
Information and Technology - The speed of knowledge and technology across borders has intensified
because of globalization. In emerging markets, the transfer of technology has helped to boost
innovation and productivity even in the recent period of weak global productivity growth.
Economic Growth and Trade - Globalization has resulted in greater interconnectedness among markets
around the world and increased communication and awareness of business opportunities in the far
corners of the globe. More investors can access to new investment opportunities and study new
markets at a greater distance than before, expansion of foreign trade volume and global competition
power.
Without globalization, the world is a closed system. No sharing of ideas and knowledge occurrences
due to a limited system for a specified area where one will rely its needs or wants domestically.
Generally, globalization is the most progressive force in the history of human kind. There is no wall
high enough to keep out climate change, pandemic, nuclear or any other grave threats we face. But,
high walls also keep out the investments, trade, people, technologies and building blocks of cooperation
that are urgently needed to address threats, stimulate job creation and fuel growth.
Globalization will make our society creative and prosperous yet more vulnerable.
Overall, the future of globalization looks bright. With the increasing innovation, development, and
transferability of technology, the global economy will witness more integration and interconnectedness.
Enhancing this is the inherent high mobility of the current and upcoming generation. While national
governments will continue to be relevant, national policies and decisions will be greatly influenced by
external factors related to the impacts of globalization. Developing and emerging markets will be mostly
affected due to their development needs and consequent demand for technology and development
skills to address their development and growth challenges.
