Question: Reactions of NO2 in sunlight for photochemical smog

Options:
(a) NO2(g) ⎯⎯ hv
→ NO(g) + O(g)
(b) NO2(g) ⎯⎯→ N2(g) + O2(g)
hv

(c) NO2(g) → 2N(g) + O2(g)

(d) None of the above
Answer: (a)
Solution: Formation of photochemical smog
When fossil fuels are burnt, a variety of pollutants are emitted into the earth's troposphere.
Two of the pollutants that are emitted are hydrocarbons (unburnt fuels) and nitric oxide (NO).
When these pollutants build up to sufficiently high levels, a chain reaction occurs from their
interaction with sunlight in which NO is converted into nitrogen dioxide (NO2). This NO2 in
turn absorbs energy from sunlight and breaks up into nitric oxide and free oxygen atom.
NO2(g) ⎯⎯ hv
→ NO(g) + O(g) …. (i)
Oxygen atoms are very reactive and combine with the O2 in air to produce ozone.
O(g) + O2(g) ⇌ O3(g) ….. (ii)
The ozone formed in the above reaction (ii) reacts rapidly with the NO(g) formed in the
reaction (i) to regenerate NO2. NO2 is a brown gas and at sufficiently high levels can
contribute to haze.
NO(g) + O3(g) → NO2(g) + O2(g) …. (iii)

− y = y + (1 − x ) y = −32  31x30

For x = −1 ; −2 (16 ) + 2 y = −32  31

y ( −1) = −480

y ( −1) − y ( −1) = 16 − ( −480 ) = 496

For x  2
f ( x )min = e2 − 1

For 0  x  2

f  ( x ) = −e 2 − x + e x = 0

 e x = e 2− x

f ( x ) = 2e − 2 = 2 ( e − 1)

Question: The mean and variance of a data was found to be 10 and 4 respectively.
Observation 8 was removed and observation 12 was added. Now, new mean is 10.2. What
will be the new variance?
Answer: 3.96
Solution:
Let number of observations be n
(10.2 ) n = 10n − 8 + 12
(10.2 ) n = 10n + 4
 n = 20
For earlier set of observations
 xi 2 − (10)2 = 4
20
  xi 2 = (104 )( 20 ) = 2080
After change
(  xi 2 ) = 2080 − 82 + 122
new

= 2160
2160
New variance = − (10.2 )
2

20
= 108 − (10.2 )

= 3.96

fog ( ac ) + gof ( b ) = ?
Answer: 189.00
Solution:
g ( f ( x ) ) = a ( x b + 3) + c

=  = 
 a   2 
 a = 2, b = 3, c = 1

g ( x ) = 2 x + 1, f ( x ) = x3 + 3

Now fog ( 2 ) + gof ( 3) = 128 + 61 = 189
