Troubleshooting Guide Scope
S lie
C -
This guide is intended for a system that was previously operational. The controller was in either Run or Remote Run mode when
the problem occurred, and no recent changes have been made by the user to the code or existing device. The basic system
r IH
consists of a 1756-L7x or 1756-L6x ControlLogix controller running ladder logic routines, a Windows-based computer with
RSLogix 5000 software or Studio 5000 Logix Designer application, discrete I/O modules, analog I/O modules, and/or remote I/O
d fo
modules on a ControlNet and/or EtherNet/IP network. Function block diagrams or other programming languages, drives and
motion, and complex communications (including gateways and messaging, DeviceNet, DH+, etc.) are not in the scope of this
te
guide. Software procedures were developed using RSLogix 5000 software version 20 and Studio 5000 Logix Designer
in
P r
application version 21. If you are using a different version, procedures and screens may vary. It is assumed you have the
fundamental skills to perform basic tasks such as configuring drivers for communications, changing controller modes, etc.
! !
How To Use This Guide
u t e
tr ib
The flowcharts in this guide are designed to be used by technicians with general industrial controls experience. Before using this
troubleshooting guide it is important to become familiar with the flowchart symbols used and their meanings. These can be found in
is
the Legend. Along with a basic understanding of the symbols it is important to follow safe troubleshooting practices when repairing a
d
t
system. A listing of safety precautions can be found under the heading Safety Considerations and Precautions Appendix and should
be read before proceeding with repairs.
n o
o
Because troubleshooting paths build on previous conditions, steps and resolutions, it is recommended that you start at the beginning
t . D
of this guide (Tab 1) each time you diagnose a new problem. Although this guide can be used without the aid of additional training
materials, it was developed for use in conjunction with ControlLogix training courses.

Safety Precautions
tr ib
d is
The warning triangle symbol is found throughout the troubleshooting procedures that follow. Whenever you encounter the warning
t
triangle, you MUST REFER to Appendix A Safety Considerations and Precautions found at the end of this guide. It outlines important
o
n
steps that must be taken. These items either guard your safety or the safety of your co-workers, or they provide important details to
minimize chances of damage to your machine, process, or drive.
When Troubleshooting, Pay Careful Attention to These General Warnings:
D o
h t .
Have all personnel remain clear of the controlled equipment when power is applied. The problem may be intermittent, and
e c
sudden unexpected machine motion could occur and result in injury. Have someone ready to operate an emergency stop switch
r
in case it becomes necessary to shut off power to the controlled equipment. Also, see NFPA 70E Part II for additional guidelines
d
lie
for safety related work practices.
S
Never reach into a machine to actuate a switch since unexpected machine motion can occur and cause injury.
C -
r I H
o
Remove all electrical power at the Main Power Disconnect switches.
f
S Removing power from one supply does NOT necessarily remove power from any other power supply.
d
e
S Release and/or restrain stored energy of auxiliary sources of power. This can include energy stored in capacitors,
int
springs, steam, compressed air, or hydraulic systems.
P r S Follow the general guidelines of NFPA 70E Part II when replacing components or performing repairs on the system.
