Reflection paper 3- Pocahontas
1. What is the difference between Pocahontas' environmental ethics view vs. the British
view?
In the movie, we can see that Pocahontas was one with nature. They live in nature's
way. While the British, on the other hand, they want to conquer the new land and build it as
their own, neglecting the animals and trees in the area. The British didn't care about nature
and were greedy for wealth and power.
2. What practices of Pocahontas tribe can be considered sustainable? Why?
Pocahontas and her tribe are very sustainable. They are very respectful to nature in
many ways, and nature takes care of them. They protect the wildlife, and nature protects and
sustains them the same way. They only get what they need and don't take everything in one
go. Because of this practice, they get to live within their means without hunger or any natural
disasters.
3. Is your environmental ethics view similar to Pocahontas or different? Why? Explain
your view.
My environmental ethics is very similar to Pocahontas, and if I had a choice, I would
want to live in the countryside, plant my food, and reduce my carbon footprint. For me, this
is my goal, to get rich enough to afford to live off the grid, eat foods from my garden, taking
care of animals which can be sources of food also. Living peacefully away from the noise of
the Metro, and most of all, living economically.
4. What environmental ethics view do you think is applicable globally? Justify your
answer.
The entire species depends on nature, not just humans. Earth's resources are finite and
do not belong exclusively to humans. Economic growth is beneficial if it promotes
development that benefits the environment and discourages action that harms it. A healthy
environment is necessary for a thriving economy. Humanity's ability to succeed hinges on how
well we can coexist with the rest of nature while working to harness its resources for our
purposes. Respect everyone and everything on this planet. Always remember that the world
does not revolve around you because you did not create it, and it was not designed for you
alone.
5. What environmental ethics view should be applied to the Philippines to improve the
current situation? Justify your answer.
I believe that we Filipinos know how to respect and take care of nature, especially the
indigenous peoples and those who live in the rural areas. But, like in every other country,
greedy people and capitalists exist. You think everything belongs to them. We need to learn
only to take what we need and not be cheap. Even the other components of our surroundings
have requirements that we must consider morally. They also encompass plants and animals in
addition to other people. Fair treatment of these factors and wise utilization of natural
resources is morally required. We have a moral responsibility to preserve the environment. We
have obligations to protect the environment. We should approach other living things with
strong ethical principles at the core. Animals and plants are no less significant than humans,
even though we are considered the major component of the ecosystem. They have the right
to live safely and get a fair number of resources.
