Ss1 Technical Drawing Lesson Plan Week 4

This lesson plan is for a technical drawing class on freehand lettering. The 40 minute lesson will teach 14 year old students how to understand and produce different types of freehand lettering. Students will learn the meaning and importance of lettering, methods of freehand and mechanical lettering, and types of vertical, slant, and gothic lettering. The lesson involves defining key terms, providing examples of each lettering style, and having students practice writing their names in the different styles. The goal is for students to fully understand lettering and be able to produce well-formed upper and lowercase letters freehand.

TOPIC: BOARD PRACTICE
TIME: 40 MINUTES
SCHEDULE: 8:10-9:32
AVERAGE AGE: 14 YEARS
LEVEL: SS1
NUMBER OF LEARNERS: 7

TIME TABLE FIT: In the previous lesson, the learners had learnt about the techniques of
fixing drawing paper to drawing board and the meaning and drawing of title block and border
line.

MAIN AIM: The learners will be able to elaborate on the meaning of freehand lettering,
identify the methods, types of lettering and produce freehand lettering in upper case and lower
case.

SUBSIDIARY AIMS: By the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to
1. Elaborate on the meaning of freehand lettering,
2. Identify the methods and types of lettering
3. Produce freehand lettering in upper case and lower case.

PERSONAL AIM: To ensure that the learners fully understand the meaning of freehand
lettering, the methods, types of lettering and the production freehand lettering in upper case and
lower case.

ASSUMPTION: The leaners may have seen or heard about freehand lettering, the methods and

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: The teacher will have to explain extensively about the meaning of
freehand lettering, the method and types of lettering and the production freehand lettering in
upper case and lower case.

TEACHING MATERIAL: Drawing materials and equipment, Posters, Charts, Video clips
etc.

LEAD IN: Lettering is the beauty of any drawing. The neatness and legibility of any finished
drawing depends on good lettering. In Technical drawing, lettering is drawn freehand. To
maintain a high standard of lettering, constant practice is required.

PROCEDURE

STEP 1: MEANING OF LETTERING

 Lettering is the systematic arrangement of alphabets in an acceptable manner.
 Lettering is also the process of forming letters, numerals and other characters used in
technical drawing.
 Lettering can also be defined as writing of titles, sub-titles, dimensions, etc., on a drawing.

Importance of lettering
1. The lettering in engineering drawing holds a very important factor which determines the
quality of an engineering drawing.
2. Lettering helps to set the overall tone of the drawing.
3. Lettering plays a major role in engineering drawing because it indicates the details of an
object on a drawing like dimensioning, name of the drawing etc.

Features of lettering
These are the features of a good lettering, they are:
1. Legibility- shape and space between letters and words
2. Uniformity- size and line thickness
3. Ease and rapidity in execution

STEP 2: METHODS AND TYPES OF LETTERING

Methods of lettering
1. Freehand lettering

2. Mechanical lettering
3. Modern drawing

1. Freehand lettering: It is done without the assistance of tools. Vertical capital letters are
preferred for most technical work. They performed within a 6×6 grid
2. Mechanical lettering: It is done with the aid of tools such as lettering guides, templates, etc.
3. Modern drawing: it is a type of lettering that was done with the computer-aided software.

Types of Lettering
There are basically three types of letterings, namely;
1. Vertical or Upright lettering
2. Slant or Italics lettering
3. Gothic or Block vertical lettering

1. Vertical or Upright lettering: This is the arrangement of alphabets in a vertical or upright

position. It is a universal system of lettering
2. Slant or Italics lettering: This is the arrangement of alphabets or letters towards a given
position at angle of 75°. It is mostly used for draftsmanship
3. Gothic or Block vertical lettering: This is a more legible arrangement of alphabets or
letters in a block or vertical position.

STEP 3: PRODUCTION OF FREEHAND LETTERING

Example 1: Produce the alphabets and numerals in upper and lower case using vertical or
upright lettering

INTERACTION PATTERN: The use of explanatory, discussion, play-way, sketching,
teacher to learner and learner to learner method in her teaching method

STUDENTS’ EVALUATION:
1. In your own understanding, what is Lettering?
2. Identify and elaborate on two types of lettering
3. Write your full name using the following lettering types
i. Vertical upright
ii. Slant lettering
TEACHER’S EVALUATION: The learners fully understood the meaning of lettering, its
method and types of lettering and the production of the various types of lettering

ASSIGNMENT:
1. In your own words, elaborate on the meaning of Lettering
2. Identify and elaborate on two types of lettering
3. Write your full name using the following lettering types
iii. Vertical upright
iv. Slant lettering
v. Gothic lettering

CONCLUSION: Lettering is extremely important in engineering drawing because it helps to

pass on information like dimensions, title etc, so it is essential to master your lettering. Lettering
is also the beauty of the drawing, it set the tone of the drawing and leaves a good impression on
the one reading it.

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE: Purpose: The word of God reveals God’s plan and purpose for
humanity (2 tim.3:16-17)
BIBLICAL INTEGRATED LESSON: By the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to
understand that just as lettering has a purpose in lettering to reveal the information and beauty
of the drawing so the word of God serve to reveal the purpose and plan of God for humanity as
a whole.
