The document describes a plan to modify a plunger to make it easier to use. It identifies that a plunger is difficult to use as it requires strength and the right amount of force. The plan is to remove the plunger's rubber cup, replace it with an accordion-style cup for easier use, and reattach it to the handle. This will allow the plunger to be used with less effort by simply pulling and pushing the handle.

ACTIVITY 1

Directions: Choose an object that you have difficulty using. Make a plan to change the form of this
object to make it more functional. Use the following as the format of your presentation:

Identify the object. Associate a picture for visualization.

Presentation of the Plan (in chronological and bulleted form)

The plunger is a device consisting of a rubber cup on a long handle, used to clear blocked
pipes by means of water pressure. Personally, I find the plunger difficult to use since it requires
strength and effort in order to use it. You have to estimate the force you need to exert since if it is
too much, the water from the toilet might splash onto you or the cup of the plunger might turn
over completely.

Plan:
 Remove the cup from the plunger.
 Get an accordion type of cup and stick it above the original cup of the plunger.
 Assemble it all together by sticking the handle and the remake cup of the plunger.
 Wait for the adhesive to dry.
 Since the accordion cup will do the work more efficiently, now you can use your plunger
with less hassle by simply pulling and pushing the handle effortlessly!
ACTIVITY 1

Discuss the very important takeaways that you have learned from the lessons. Discussed.

I had several important insights from Lesson 1, which focuses on humanities and
the arts. First, focus on the relationship between humanities and arts. Humanities and arts have
always been essential to all human societies. Our knowledge can foster greater global knowledge
and establish the basis for a more socially engaged civilization. It can also encourage you to
think critically, perform creatively, and prosper in a fast-changing environment. They teach us
about the past and help us build the future. Furthermore, the roles of arts and diverse types of art
are functional and non-functional. Art is a representation of society and culture. It helps us
comprehend who we are as people and determines how we interact with one another. Overall, art
reflects our inner ideas, identity, feelings, and experiences.

ACTIVITY 4
Directions: Look intently and examine with appreciation and curiosity the artwork of Ang
Kiukok’s Pieta. Answer sensibly the questions below.

[Link] do you think is the meaning behind the art piece Pieta by Ang Kiukok?

The message of this painting, in my perspective, is Jesus' sorrows and anguish.

Pieta highlights Jesus' suffering and agony during his lifetime, particularly his last days before
sentience to crucifixion as seen by the holes in the hand and legs of the painting.

2. Why do you think the artist made such artwork?

The artist made such artwork to highlight how he appreciates religious symbols as
a method of conveying his entire trust and faith in Jesus. He also created that artwork to
showcase the message behind Jesus’ suffering.

3. Were you affected by this artwork? In what ways?

Yes, I was emotionally moved by the artwork to the extent that I felt empathy for
what the painting was intended to convey. It was like being imprisoned within the box and
enduring Jesus' sorrows yet helpless to escape and with no one to seek rescue for.

4. Do you think that the artist was successful in conveying the message to his viewers? Why?
Why not?

Yes, I consider this artist effective in expressing his message to his audience
because I, as a viewer, felt the message and emotions he was trying to convey without relying on
words. From that painting, I understand the story he wanted to tell, his beliefs and ideas, or
convey the truth that the painter wanted to show to the viewers. I was disturbed, and art was
intended to disturb you.
5. Will you take a second look at this painting should you be given the chance to visit
an art gallery where it shall be featured and displayed? Why? Why not?

Definitely, I will have a second look at this painting if I'm given the opportunity
to visit an art gallery where it will be shown and presented since I'd want to observe the painting
up close and in more detail in order to appreciate it even more. I would focus on small details,
considering small details in artworks have such a significant influence that fully enhance the art
into a masterpiece.

Painting and sculpture are significant in representing and preserving cultural identities as they reflect the unique values, traditions, and histories of different communities. They serve as visual narratives that document societal beliefs and everyday life, offering insights into the cultural psyche. For example, 'Spoliarium' by Juan Luna captures historical narratives of colonization and resistance, while sculptures like 'The Oblation' by Guillermo Tolentino symbolize national identity and ideals. These art forms foster cultural continuity and provide a medium for cross-cultural dialogue and understanding .

Historical and contemporary art forms contribute to global cultural dialogues by serving as catalysts for cross-cultural exchange and understanding. Historical art provides a context for shared human experiences across time, offering insights into different societal values and conflicts. Contemporary art builds on these foundations, addressing contemporary global issues and fostering dialogues around identity, power, and technology. Together, these forms create platforms for artists and audiences worldwide to engage with diverse perspectives, promoting mutual understanding and cooperation in addressing global challenges .

Modern national artists like Ryan Cayabyab play a crucial role in evolving a country's cultural and artistic identity by creating works that reflect contemporary experiences while drawing from traditional influences. They help redefine and modernize cultural narratives through groundbreaking compositions and performances, contributing to a dynamic cultural landscape. By gaining international acclaim, they also enhance the global visibility of their country's culture, fostering cultural pride and influencing future generations of artists .

The roles of an artist and an artisan differ primarily in their approach: artists often focus on expressing personal visions, pushing boundaries, and creating unique works for aesthetic appreciation, whereas artisans are typically associated with producing functional, skill-based crafts, often following traditional methods. These differences imply that artists contribute to cultural heritage by innovating and challenging norms, inspiring cultural discourse, while artisans preserve and maintain cultural traditions through skilled craftsmanship, ensuring the survival of traditional practices. Together, they enrich cultural heritage by blending innovation with tradition .

Arts and humanities shape a socially engaged civilization by fostering critical thinking, encouraging creative expression, and enhancing cultural understanding. They provide insights into human experiences, enabling societies to reflect on their history and envision future possibilities. Through the exploration of diverse cultures and societies, arts and humanities promote empathy, social cohesion, and a broader global knowledge, which are essential for engaging with and addressing complex social issues in rapidly evolving contexts .

Traditional crafts like Kalinga pottery and Tibetan knife making influence modern artistic expression by serving as sources of inspiration and cultural continuity. These crafts embody traditional techniques and aesthetic values that contemporary artists integrate into modern designs, preserving cultural heritage while also adapting to contemporary artistic contexts. The melding of traditional craft techniques with modern materials and forms creates a bridge between past and present, encouraging cultural preservation and innovation in global artistic practices .

Incorporating diverse art forms like literature, theater, and dance enriches understanding of complex human experiences by providing multiple perspectives and emotional depths. Literature allows introspective exploration of personal and societal issues. Theater presents dramatic reenactments of life experiences, offering immersive encounters with human emotions and conflicts. Dance communicates through movement, expressing culturally specific narratives and shared emotions. Together, these art forms broaden the scope of human understanding by highlighting varied experiences and engendering empathy across different contexts and audiences .

Ang Kiukok's Pieta conveys religious symbolism through its depiction of Jesus' suffering, highlighted by the visible wounds on his hands and legs, which reference his crucifixion. The artist captures emotional impact using visual cues like facial expressions and body language that resonate with viewers. The work's ability to evoke empathy and understanding without textual explanation reflects its success in visually communicating profound emotional and spiritual themes, thus allowing the viewer to engage with the art on a personal level and interpret its message intuitively .

The modification plan for a plunger involves adding an accordion-type cup to the existing rubber cup, enhancing the plunger's functionality by reducing the force needed to clear blockages. This illustrates functional design improvement as it addresses the practical problems users face, such as exerting too much force, which can result in water splashes. The accordion-style cup allows easier pushing and pulling, emphasizing a user-centric approach in design through ergonomics and efficiency .

It is essential for art to disturb or challenge its audience because it prompts reflection, discussion, and a deeper understanding of complex issues. Art achieves this by confronting viewers with provocative or unsettling themes, pushing them to reconsider their perceptions and values. This engagement stimulates emotional and intellectual responses, driving societal and personal growth. For instance, Ang Kiukok's Pieta disturbs through its portrayal of suffering and evokes empathy and introspection, compelling the audience to explore themes of faith and human suffering .
