What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
solving multi-step problems involving multiplication and addition or subtraction of
decimals, mixed decimals and whole numbers including money using appropriate
problem solving strategies and tools. The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary
level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Solve multi-step problems involving multiplication and addition or subtraction of
decimals, mixed decimals and whole numbers including money using appropriate
problem solving strategies and tools

What I Know

Before you start studying this module, answer these test items first to determine what
you already know about this topic.

Translate the following problems to equations or number sentences then solve.

1. The coach gave his team Php 5,000.00 for transportation and food on their field
trip. The transportation fare is worth Php350.00 per day. They will be having the

Well, how was it? Were you able to answer all the questions correctly? If you did,
then that’s very good. This shows that you already know much about the topic. You may
still study the module to review what you already know. Who knows, you might learn a
few more new things as well.

If you got a low score, don’t feel bad. That means this module is meant for you!
It will help you understand important concepts that you can apply in your daily life. If
you study this module carefully, you will learn the answers to the items in the test and
a lot more! Are you ready?

You may now go to the next page and begin.

What’s New

Have you seen a weighing scale?

Where do we usually use the weighing scale?
The problem below is about a determining the weight of an object. Read
the situation below and try to answer the questions that follow.

The large block on the

left of the weighing scale
weighs the same as the
small blocks on the right.
The weight of one large
block is equal to 4 small
blocks. If the total weight of
3 small blocks and 2 large
blocks is 82.5 kg, what is
the weight of the large
block and one small block?

Answer the following questions:

1. What are the steps in solving a word problem

2. Why do we have to analyze the word problem before giving the answer?

3. What is the importance of knowing the hidden question in a problem?

4. Do all problems have hidden questions?

5. How do you know that your answer is correct?

4
What is It

Were you able to solve the problem? Let’s check on how the problem is solved.

To solve multi-step problems involving multiplication and addition or subtraction of decimals,

mixed decimals and whole numbers including money, we are guided by the following:
Understand

 Know what is asked

 Know the given facts
 If any, determine the hidden questions
Plan

 Determine the operation to be used

 Write the number sentence
Solve

 Show the solution

 Check and look back
 Check your answer
 State the complete answer

Understand.
a. What is asked?
The weight of each block (small and large).
b. What are the given facts?
 The weight of each large block on the left is equal to the weight of the
small blocks on the right.
 The total weight of 3 small and 2 large blocks is 82.5 kg.
 The weight of one large block is equal to 4 small blocks.
c. What is the hidden question?
How many small blocks is equal to 2 large blocks?
Plan.
What operations shall we use to solve the problem? Select your own
strategy.
Consider the following conversion:
The 3 small and 2 large blocks weighs 82.5 kg as shown by the illustration
below.
1 small block = 0.25 or ¼ of the large block
5
Solve. Show your computation. Use Guess and Check strategy.
Let us approximate the weight for each block.
Large Block Small Block Total (kg)
(kg) (kg)

10 2.5 (10x2)+(2.5x3)=27.5

20 5 (20x2)+(5x3)=55

30 7.5 (30x2)+(7.5x3)=82.5

Answer: Each large block weighs 30 kg and each small block weighs 7.5 kg
Check. Check your answer. One way to check if the answer is correct is to go
back to your illustration.
(30 x 2) + (7.5 x 3) = 60 + 22.5 = 82.5
Other solution
If 1 large blocks is equal to 4 small blocks, what should we do to get the
number of small blocks that is equal to 2 large blocks? Yes we must multiply 4
to 2 that is equal to 8
So 2 large blocks + 3 small blocks = 82.5 kg
We substitute 2 large blocks to 8 small blocks
(2x4) small block + 3 small block = 82.5 kg.
8 small block + 3 small block= 82.5 kg.
11 small blocks = 82.5 kg
Then transpose 11 by dividing 82.5 by 11
Small block = 82.5 kg ÷ 11
Small block = 7.5 kg
So a large block = 4 small blocks
A large block = 4 x 7.5 Kg
A Large Block = 30 kg

6
Let us check against the equation
2 large blocks + 3 small blocks = 82.5 kg
(30 x 2) + (7.5 x 3) = 60 + 22.5 = 82.5
Another example:
Jinky had Php500.00. She went to a bookstore and bought 3 notebooks at
Php27.50 each and a dictionary that costs Php285.25. How much money was
left to her?
Understand.
a. What is asked?
The total money left to Jinky
b. What are the given facts?
Amount of money Jinky had – Php500.00.
3 notebooks at Php27.50 each.
1 dictionary at Php285.25.
c. What is the hidden question?
The total amount of money spent from the amount of money Jinky had.
Plan.
What operations shall we use to solve the problem? Select your own
strategy.
Answer the hidden questions by using multiplication to get the cost of
the 3 notebooks.
Then add the cost of the notebooks and the dictionary.
Finally, subtract the total amount of money spent from the amount of money
Jinky had.

Solve. Show your computation. Use Guess and Check strategy.

cost of 3 notebooks = 3 x Php27.50 = Php82.50
cost of the notebooks and dictionary = Php82.50 + Php285.25 = Php367.75 (total
amount spent)
money left to Jinky = Php500.00 – Php367.75 = Php132.25 (the answer to the
problem)
Check. Check your answer. One way to check if the answer is correct is to go
back to your illustration.

7
The problem says that Jinky had Php500.00 at the start. So, add the
money spent and the money left. If the total is Php500.00, the answer is
correct.
Php367.75 + Php132.25 = Php500.00
