CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
The tertiary school major chosen by a student has a considerable impact on his or her
future career and financial stability. Choosing a career path is not as simple and clear as it
would initially appear. The majority of students do not give much thought to what they want
to do with their lives after college graduation until it is too late. At the age of seven, every
youngster begins thinking about what they want to do for a living, but it is not until high
school that they receive knowledge on the different career pathways accessible to them.
Students who are preparing to finish high school should have a clear understanding of their
long-term goals and aspirations before selecting a college major. By creating a plan for his
professional future, he can better focus his efforts, gain insight into who he is as an
individual, understand the inner workings of a certain business, and acquire the knowledge
and experience necessary to break into that field. When high school students begin learning
about and researching alternative job opportunities, they typically discover, after being
exposed to a vast array of options, that they wind up changing their minds multiple times.
Changing one's mind about working later and entering the workforce is an additional option.
If a beginner realizes that there are multiple occupations that match their interests, the
likelihood that they will transfer careers will increase as they get more knowledge about the
various opportunities. The decision of a career path might be difficult due to the numerous
elements to consider. An example of such a factor is parental influence. Parents have a
significant impact on their children's personal and professional development, as well as their
decisions. Parents want their children to be happy and successful, and they are aware that
their children's decisions in life will have a significant impact on whether or not these
outcomes occur.
In the Philippines, studies revealed that parental influence among senior high school
students’ career choice is high. In a study of Cortez (2018), it was revealed that in high
school, adolescents face stress as a result of the pressure to make significant choices, such as
which university to attend and which courses to take. This study aimed to glean useful
information on how students, parents, and schools can facilitate more positive outcomes by
examining parents' perspectives, students' school selections, and students' preferred tracks.
The study used a descriptive-correlational methodology. As indicated by an examination of
their responses, students acknowledged parental influence on their career decisions via
channels such as parental motivation, parental interactions, parental expectations, parental
support, and parental attitude. Respondents were aware of the importance of environmental
and philosophical factors, as well as campus and facilities, academic and extracurricular
programs, and accessibility, while choosing a school. When choosing a course of study for
their next level, students considered a variety of criteria, including future employment
possibilities, their own interests and aptitudes, their parents' occupations, and the influence of
their classmates.
Although there are studies regarding career choice of college students, fewer studies
have been undertaken on the topic of parental impact on the decision-making processes of
college freshmen compared to the amount of studies conducted on the topic of high school
students' career decisions. This reveals a huge gap on the field of study that needs to be
addressed and fulfilled.
In relation, the researchers have observed with past and relevant data that parental
influence is a great predictor of career choice among students who are still trying to figure out
what and where they want to find themselves in the future.
This lead and motivated the researchers into conducting the said study. This inquiry
will be centered on the aforementioned aims. This study's findings may aid parents in guiding
their children into professional paths that deliver a higher sense of contentment.
