The Ajima dam project site is located in Angolala Tera district of North Shewa zone of Amhara
region. It is found between Chacha and Ginager towns. The Ajima river catchment to dam site at
coordinates E 39° 31’ 48” and N 9° 29’ 15” covers about 83 km 2. It rises on the South Eastern
ridge between Blue Nile and Awash River basins descending in the northerly direction to join the
Jema which is sub basin of the Abay. The dam site can be accessed driving for about 17 kms on
the main route from Debre Birhan to Chacha and turning on the all-weather road for about 34
Km towards Ginager. The main watercourse of the Ajima River from south Easterly highlands is
joined by minor tributaries nearby the dam site. Chacha town lies with very close distance
downstream of the dam site.
Flow at the dam site is estimated by transferring the estimated flow at the Chacha gauging station
and adapting the optimized parameter obtained from calibration exercise of Chacha station.
Accordingly, the estimated long-term mean monthly flow at the dam site is 36.16MCM.
Reservoir simulation has been exercised with due consideration of all relevant input data. The
flows at the dam site estimated were used as base data for generating synthetic monthly series
flow using Thomas-Fiering flow generation model. For the reservoir, simulation analysis the
irrigation demand is estimated with two scenarios. The maximum possible command area for
scenario one is 7000ha for wet season and 4570ha for dry season whereas for scenario two it is
possible to irrigate 6200ha for dry season only. The mentioned irrigable area is achieved when
the reservoir elevation is at 2846m;
1 HEAD WORK
The major components of the Works of Ajima dam design are;
Main dam (zoned)
Spillway
Intake Tower
Irrigation outlet Conduit
Diversion during construction facilities
Terminal structures
Dam Instrumentation
Access Road
1.2 Spillway
The reinforced concrete floor spillway is designed to discharge routed out of half PMF which is
118.9.m3/s, and it has a nominal total crest length of 15 m. The crest level (full supply level) is
2846amsl. The structure is 634m long, comprising an approach channel, ogee crest, chute
(discharge carrier), stilling basin and exit channe1. The spillway exit channel is 61m long,
discharging into the river channel and the excavated approach channel is about 135m. It also
comprises an access bridge of span length 15 m with a central pier that provides access across
the spillway.
The required intake tower for Ajima dam reservoir operation mechanism was proposed to be
24.2m high and it is connected with outlet conduit and stilling basin works to dissipate the
energy of outgoing water just after the outlet portal. The outlet conduit is supposed to convey
water for irrigation during normal situations and it will also evacuate the dam above its minimum
operating level whenever necessary within 20.51days. The downstream release will be also
operated with the irrigation outlet conduit. Therefore, the outlet conduit dimension is designed to
deliver water for irrigation, animal and rural water supply, emergency outlet and downstream
release. The outlet conduit will have trash racks at its bell mouth inlet and two control gates at its
downstream. The outlet portal is connected with a parabolic drop type energy dissipater. The
downstream works transfer the outlet conduit flows to the main canal from which the ecological
releases and the evacuation water to Ajima River channel through escaping channel.
In addition to irrigation conduit low level conduits is also provided for diversion during
construction and also evacuate the reservoir water below the irrigation outlet which accounts to
be about 17MCM. The evacuation time is computed to be 15.6 days. Accordingly, the depletion
time for the Ajima reservoir above and below the irrigation conduit which is 20.51 + 15.6 =
36.11days which is acceptable by international standards which in most cases recommended
between 1-2months.
1.4 Project Access Road
The project Access Road provides a link between the Woreda town namely Chacha to the Dam
site. It is 15 km long from Chacha along Burana Totosie road at which turning is required from
Burana Totosie kebele to the left direction. The Access Road will link into the crest road across
the Main Dam, and eventually provide a permanent link to the left bank of the reservoir to
connect with Kitalegn kebele over the spillway bridge.
