ENGC 2201 Course Outline- Sem. I, 2022 / 2023

Course Description
English Communication 2201 is a two-credit hour course that integrates the four skills: reading,
writing, listening, and speaking.
Prerequisite: Assessment test (B1 score) or ENC1202

Course Objectives
Upon the end of this course, students are expected to achieve the following objectives in
relation to the four language skills:
Reading
 read for main ideas
 use background Knowledge to predict content
 work out vocabulary meaning from context
 use visuals to predict content
 read for details
 skim text for general ideas
 scan to predict content and find information
 understand key vocabulary
 identify purpose and audience
 preview and predict content
 make inferences from the text
 understand discourse structure
Writing
 use academic vocabulary and grammatical structures and features needed for the
writing tasks efficiently
 use punctuation marks properly
 write a well- structured paragraph

 write an introduction for an essay
 write a conclusion for an essay
 write a balanced opinion essay
Listening
 watch and understand videos on different topics
 take notes while listening
 understand key vocabulary
 listen for main ideas
 listen for details
 listen for opinions
 listen for text organization features
 identify rhetorical questions
 understand explanations
 listen for counter arguments
Speaking
 take part in group discussions
 expand ideas and give examples of personal experiences
 start a debate with a proper opening statement using signposting language
 give presentations
 read sentences aloud with proper pronunciation and intonation.

Course Material

1. Unlock 3, Reading, Writing and Critical Thinking (with online workbook) 2nd ed. by
Westbrook, Baker, and Sowton 2019.
2. Unlock 3, Listening, Speaking and Critical Thinking (with online workbook) 2nd ed. by
Ostrowska, Jordan, and Sowton 2019.

Attendance Policy:
Regular attendance is mandatory in all classes. Any student who misses more than 4
contact hours without an acceptable excuse will receive FA.
If you miss one-third of the classes, with or without an excuse, you will receive FA.

Important:

 Students are requested to do all the required activities and tasks of the ONLINE
workbooks because they are included in all quizzes and tests.
 Students must create CLMS accounts of both online workbooks.

Grade breakdown (Total 100%):
The pass mark for the course is 60%
