Performance Based Learning Objectives:


Learners will be able to:
 Punctuate there poem 100% accurately after the conference
 Have 80% of their poem spelled correctly after the conference
 Be able to look up and correct the spelling for the other 20% of the words
 Punctuate their letter 100% correctly after the conference
 Formulate their thoughts and put them onto paper
 Use dictionaries, or other technology, to correct misspelled words

 This is an introductory lesson to poems
 Students have written letters before but have not received directions on how to punctuate
 Students struggle with writing and this is a supportive lesson

Differentiation/accommodations:
 Students will have the option to write a poem or a letter
 Students will make a rough draft first and receive help with correcting misspelled words
 I will correct the letter completely for the students who cannot read or write well (IEP)
 Students can use their technology to find the correct spellings
 I will provide examples for students before setting them loose

Students becoming immediately discouraged when they hear that they will be writing

Part 1:  Engagement/Warm-up: (12 Minutes)

Engage students by reading valentines poems to them from the PowerPoint.


After doing a thumbs up or thumbs down for if they have written a poem and then if they have
written a letter we will go over a PowerPoint. The PowerPoint will have different poems, and
easy poetry rules to follow. The poem will also go over punctuation in letters. Students will
receive a handout of poetry rules.

Transition:
I want to give you a chance to be creative all on your own and express your own ideas! It is your turn
to try out creative writing!

Part 2:  Instruction/Exploration: (43 minutes)

 Students will create their own poem or letter first


 they will sign up for a conference when they finish, while they wait for their turn to conference, they
will finish coloring and cutting their hearts.
 Once the conference is complete, students will find the correct spelling of the words I circled, then use

the rough draft to create their final copy on the final copy sheet.
 The sheet will then be taped to their heart.
 Students who finish early can make a pick one choice until everyone is done, students who don’t finish
will put theirs into their ketchup folder to finish later.

 
Transition: It is time for Valentine Show and Tell! Turn to the person next to you and share
what you did!
 
Part 3:  After Lesson: (5 minutes)
Closure:

 Have students who are done hang their heart on the board, and those who aren’t done put them into
their ketchup folder.
 Have students complete an exit ticket

lesson)
