Learner’s Tasks
Lesson Overview
What do you remember about this signage?
Oftentimes, you read about any sources of information and check their
truthfulness. When reading texts or articles, you’ll come across information that
presents facts or opinions.
This lesson would be focusing on determining the relevance and the
truthfulness of ideas by distinguishing facts from opinions. First, let us define the terms:
facts and opinions.
Facts are statements that can be proven true or false and can be verified
objectively or proven. In other words, a fact is true and correct no matter what. Here
are some examples of facts.
1. Face mask, social distancing and online schooling, are already part of the
new normal on this pandemic era.
2. Surigao del Sur Division uses modular learning approach as a modality for
distance learning.
3. There are 12 months a year, 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.

1
Questions to Identify Facts:
1. Can the statement be proved or demonstrated to be true?
2. Can the statement be observed in practice or operation? Can you see it
happen?
3. Can the statement be verified by witnesses, manuscripts, or documents?
Opinions are statements that reflect the views or ideas that people have
about subjects and topics. It can be statements that express a writer’s feelings,
attitudes, or beliefs. They are neither true nor false. They are one person’s view about
a topic or issue. For example, your friend says that all ice cream is tasty. This is his/her
opinion, because not everyone may think the same way, nor can it be proved to be
true.
Opinions can be based on facts or emotions and sometimes they are meant
to deliberately mislead others. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the author’s
purpose and choice of language. Consider the following examples
1. People who will not get the vaccine are likely to be infected with Covid 19.
2. Education today is worthless because children don’t learn anything from
modular learning.
3. Face to face classes are still the best learning modality because teachers are
still the best learning facilitators.
Types of Opinions:
1. Positions on controversial issues
2. Predictions about things in the future
3. Evaluations of people, places, and things
Words to Identify Opinions:
1. Biased Words (bad, worse, worst, good, better, best, worthwhile,
worthless, etc.)
2. Qualifiers (all, always, likely, never, might, seem, possibly, probably,
should, etc.)

Philippines' Duterte defends purchase of Chinese COVID-19 vaccine
MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte defended his government’s decision
to purchase Chinese-made coronavirus vaccines, saying they are as good as the shots
developed by the Americans and the Europeans.
“The Chinese are not lacking in brains,” Duterte said in a late-night televised address on
Wednesday. “The Chinese are bright. They would not venture (into producing vaccines) if it is
not safe, sure and secure.”
Duterte made the remarks as questions have been raised over the level of protection
Sinovac Biotech’s experimental COVID-19 vaccine can provide, after researchers in Brazil
released late-stage clinical data showing efficacy that was lower than initially announced.
At least one Philippine senator, Francis Pangilinan, called on the government to cancel the
purchase of the Sinovac vaccine, one of seven it is lining up as it plans to begin immunization
next month.
Manila has locked in 25 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine, with the first 50,000 expected
to arrive in February.
Duterte, who has pursued warmer ties with Beijing, has said previously his preference was for
his country to source its COVID-19 vaccines from either China or Russia.
Carlito Galvez, a former general in charge of the vaccination procurement effort, said the
government has also firmed up supply deals with Novavax, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Pfizer,
Johnson & Johnson, and Russia’s Gamaleya Institute for 137 million doses in total.
These are on top of 40 million doses the Philippines expects to receive through the World
Health Organization’s COVAX facility in the first quarter, Galvez said.
The Philippines has among the most coronavirus cases in Asia but has trailed regional peers
in securing vaccines, with which it hopes this year to inoculate 70 million people, or two-thirds
of its population.
An opinion poll showed on Thursday less than a third of Filipinos are willing to get inoculated
against the coronavirus as many have voiced concerns over safety. Philippine regulators
have yet to approve any COVID-19 vaccines.
