   CHAPTER 1 

INTRODUCTION 

Background of the Study

In times of emergency and crime, it is essential to have an item that can easily

grab and protect the individual. This could be an everyday tool that people use in their

everyday lives and as well as can protect themselves during emergencies and crises. A

loud noise that can get the attention of people that allows the people around the

environment to be informed that someone is in need of help, even during night time and

an additional security feature that allows the individual to protect themselves

immediately by the application of pepper spray and taser. These certain things are what

the researchers wanted to produce and develop. This umbrella innovation, provide a

certain security feature that could emit a signal to the people around to save people

from any types of crimes namely; rape, hold-up, theft and kidnapping. This tool is not

just essential during the rainy and heat weather but it could also be used as a self

defense method, in which it is accompanied by pepper spray, alarm security system,

flashlight and taser. It is a tool where an alarm security system could be pressed

through a button during an emergency that could notify the people around and a pepper

spray and taser to help the individual to escape physical harm from the possible

offender during emergency and crime.

In America there have been laws that expand civilians’ rights to use force in self-

defense on crime and violence, in which the extent of these laws affects public health

and safety. (Yakubovich, G., et al. 2021) According to different surveys that was
conducted, Pepper Spray is widely used in America, and it is considered as an effective

self-defense device in violence and crime where people don’t have the experience of

using it but in the time of crises and violence those individuals was able to use it

effectively and efficiently. (Strybel, D. et al 2020). In Self-defense, there are a wide

range of tools available that an individual may use. It includes handy flashlights,

scissors and even umbrellas that can be improvised weapons for self-defense. The said

tools were essentials to everyone. It is handy and can be carried in everyday lives of the

professionals, teachers, and even students. (Kamath, A., et al 2021). 

It is stated in our law, the use of pepper spray is considered a reasonable

precaution against apprehended danger. In which there are no laws against the

possession or use of pepper spray in the Philippines .The country has a moderately

high rate of crime and violence. In 2021 to 2022 the PNP recorded 5,192 of theft, rape

and harassment cases in the country. (Casilao, J. 2023)

Police Region Office (PRO) Region 11 said 413 rape cases were recorded in

Davao Region. The highest incidence was in Davao City where 123 cases were

monitored. Of the figure, 94 are minor victims. With the increased number of reported

crime in the country, it is imperative for people, especially those who are more

vulnerable, such as women and children, to protect themselves from criminal predators.

The use of an alarm security system and self defense feature in an umbrella is

considered a reasonable precaution against apprehended danger. (GMA News

Objectives of the Study

The purpose of this project study is to develop and innovate an umbrella with safety

features for the purpose of developing and producing a tool that could aid any individual in

times of crimes and violence.                                              

Specifically, the aims of this study are:                                               

1. To determine the development and installation of alarm security system and self

defense feature in an umbrella for safety and security purposes;                                       

    2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the system 

 3. To examine the effects on user’s safety                                                             

4. Create a new product that will be a reliable source of protection against any

criminal activities.

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the following personalities and organizations;

community, school, teachers, parents, students and future researchers.  

Community. Our project is a self-defense umbrella tool that can be used for any

occasion and it helps give the people around to be informed that someone is in need of

help and gives them the necessary tools to defend themselves from any kind of crimes

and violence that may occur or other forms of physical harm.

 School. Specifically, the Holy Cross of Davao College as they may be able to

benefit from this project study to provide and aid student’s especially when students and

faculties life is in danger. Since crime is very rampant nowadays in our society.

  Teachers. This study is applicable to all people, especially the teacher. If ever the

teacher has encountered emergencies or danger, there is one thing that can help him

and that is our project research, an umbrella with pepper spray, to protect himself in the

danger. And the most important of this, it can easily handle anyone for self-defense. 

Parents. The result of this project study helps them to feel safe about the security

of their children anywhere. When their children go outside, it is important that they feel

secure at all times, even without the parents’ supervision.

Students. The student may feel comfortable and secure anywhere. If there

is a possible harm that may occur, they can easily use the umbrella as a tool for self-

defense, they could press the alarm and the people would know that someone is in

danger and the other umbrella features could help them to escape physical harm from

the possible offender during an emergency and crime.

Future Researchers. The future researchers can further study to improve

the design and efficiency of the completed project and to gain information and data for

their own studies as literature in the same field of discipline.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This project study is only limited to the designing, constructing, testing, revising,

and evaluating the project. Development and installation of an alarm security system

and self defense features in an umbrella for safety and security purposes is to provide

and aid individuals in violence and crimes. This project includes installing an alarm

security system that will alert people in the surrounding that someone is in need of help.

The self defense features will be installed to the umbrella, that the user can be able to

use during crime and violence.

The features of the umbrella include a flashlight and a taser in its end and a

pepper spray and alarm place in its handle. The umbrella innovation that

includes Taser, flashlight, alarm, and pepper spray is effective and versatile tool that

they can use to protect themself. All of these benefits are available in one product.

Taser, flashlight, alarm and pepper spray are all products that can be used in an

umbrella. All of them are useful in certain situations and can make your life easier or

safer. The Taser weapon is a non-lethal weapon that uses electricity to incapacitate

your opponent. An individual can use this weapon on both animals and people. The

flashlight is a light source that helps an individual see better in the dark. It can be used

for self-defense or to search for something in the dark. The pepper spray is an

aerosolized chemical that irritates the eyes of attackers when they get close enough to

them. This spray can also be used as an offensive weapon against attackers who come

too close during an attack situation.

This figure illustrates the conceptual framework of the study. It also shows the

input, process and output of this study. This framework will aid the researchers in

achieving their goal of developing and installing of alarm security system and self-

defense feature in an umbrella; for safety and security features.

 Conceptual Model

The concept of the study is modeled in an Input-Output way to distinguish the

study’s variables. Under the Input are the variables; theories, references, ideas and

suggestions, supplies, materials, tools and equipment. Under the process, variables are

formulating, designing, constructing, experimenting, revising, and evaluating. And lastly,

the output of the study is to develop and installation of Alarm Security System and self-

defense feature in an umbrella for safety and security features.

Operational Model

The following terms as used in the research paradigm and the technical features

are being defined operationally. Such terms as;

Battery - It refers to a device that converts chemical energy contained within its active

materials directly into electric energy by means of an electrochemical oxidation

reduction (redox) reaction. This type of reaction involves the transfer of electrons from

one material to another via an electric circuit.

Wire - This is used for establishing electrical conductivity between two devices of an

electrical circuit. They possess negligible resistance to the passage of current.

Alarm- sounder - known as sounder beacons & Alarm Strobes, are key components in

any commercial or residential security or fire alarm system. Alarm sounders can be

used in a variety of applications such as burglary deterrent, alerting employees of

hazards such as fires or other dangers in the workplace.

Flashlight - Flashlights are devices that provide illumination without the use of

electricity. This strong beam of light can be easily controlled for specific tasks. These

tools are necessary for countless environments and situations. Like most tools,

flashlights are not one size fits all for users. 

Taser - A taser is an electroshock weapon used to incapacitate people, allowing them

to be approached and handled in an unresisting and thus safe manner. 

Umbrella- of cloth on a folding metal frame supported by a central rod, used as

protection against rain or sometimes sun.
