Practical Defense Against an Unseen Killer:
Point of View of a Covid 19 Survivor

The present COVID-19 epidemic has impacted all of us. Our many social identities and the social groupings to which we
belong influence our social inclusion and, as a result, our vulnerability to epidemics.
There is this local practice of curing oneself, proven by people testifying for its effectiveness. It is called “Suob” or steam
inhalation. It is said to be very effective especially to those who have strong tolerance in smelling. In this process, a person
experiencing Covid-like symptoms need to inhale the steam coming from a hot water as his face is covered with a towel and a blanket
if he wishes to steam his whole body.
This is the process that a bank teller followed an excruciating feeling to the extent that she cannot breathe and talk until
was tested positive.

Barangay Sta. Lucia is one among the 44 barangays of the Municipality of Gerona, Province of
Tarlac. In the years 1913 to 1918 the people were happy and contented for they had a bountiful harvest. The
happiness and contentment of the people were suddenly broken when a dreadful sickness, smallpox spread
in the community. Barangay Sta. Lucia sought help from the Sanitary Division (Sanidad).
Mr. Ladislao Taberna, the sanitary inspector who was assigned in the place assembled all the people
in the barangay plaza and gave them vaccination. It was in 1918 when smallpox was eradicated in the
barangay.

However, just after the smallpox outbreak, the people of Sta. Lucia faced another challenge when rinderpest

spreading decease.
In addition to these unfortunate events, another illness called “trangcaso” was rampant in every
houses. Every household was not spared by the illness where death occurred every day in the barangay for
two-months period.
