i) 3 forces
ii) 2 forces and a torque
b) A two cylinder engine shown in fig (1) is in static equilibrium. The dimensions are 16
OA = OB = 50mm, AC = BD = 250 mm, angle AOB = 90◦ Determine the torque on
the crank OAB.
OR
2 a) Prove that the maximum fluctuation of energy in a flywheel as ∆E = 2ECS 05
b) If the turning moment diagram for a multi-cylinder engine is drawn 15
to a scale of 1 mm to 500 N-m torque and 1 mm to 6° of crank displacement. The
intercepted areas between output torque curve and mean resistance line taken in
order from one end, in sq. mm are – 30, + 410, – 280, + 320, – 330, + 250, – 360, +
280, – 260 sq. mm, when the engine is running at 800 r.p.m.
The engine has a stroke of 300 mm and the fluctuation of speed is not to exceed ±
2% of the mean speed.
Determine a suitable diameter and cross-section of the flywheel rim for a limiting
value of the safe centrifugal stress of 7 MPa. The material density may be assumed
as 7200 kg/m3.
The width of the rim is to be 5 times the thickness.
UNIT 2
3 a) Derive an expression of total friction torque for a Flat pivot bearing subjected to 08
uniform pressure and uniform wear.
b) 2.5kW of power is transmitted by an open-belt drive. The linear velocity of the belt 12
is 2.5m/s.The angle of lap on the smaller pulley is 165°.The coefficient of friction is
0.3.
Determine the effect on power transmission in the following cases:
(i) Initial tension in the belt is increased by 8%.
(ii) Initial tension in the belt is decreased by 8%.
(iii) Angle of lap is increased by 8%.by the use of an idler pulley,
for the same speed and the tension on the tight side.
(iv) Coefficient of friction is increased by 8%.by suitable dressing
of friction surface of the belt

4 a) Define the terms Stabilty, Isochronism and Sensitivity with reference to a Governor. 06
b) Each ball of a porter governor has a mass of 3kg and the mass of the sleeve is 14
15kg.The governor has equal arms, each of 200mm length and
Pivoted on the axis of rotation. When the radius of rotation of the ball is 120mm,the
sleeve has rise of 160mm at the maximum speed. Determine the
(i) Range of speed
(ii) Lift of the sleeve
(iii) Effort of the governor
(iv) Power of the governor.
What will be the effect of friction at the sleeve if it is equivalent to 8N?
UNIT 3
5 a) What do you mean by static balancing and dynamic balancing? 05
b) A ship propelled by a turbine rotor which has a mass of 5 tonnes and a speed 14
of 2100 r.p.m. The rotor has a radius of gyration of 0.5 m and rotates in a clockwise
direction when viewed from the stern. Find the gyroscopic effects in the following
conditions:
1. The ship sails at a speed of 30 km/h and steers to the left in a curve having 60 m
radius.
2. The ship pitches 6 degree above and 6 degree below the horizontal position. The
bow is
descending with its maximum velocity. The motion due to pitching is simple
harmonic and the periodic
time is 20 seconds.
3. The ship rolls and at a certain instant it has an angular velocity of 0.03 rad/s
clockwise when viewed from stern.
Determine also the maximum angular acceleration during pitching.
Explain how the direction of motion due to gyroscopic effect is determined in each
case.
