ACTIVITY SHEET Geometry of Simple Compounds

1. The document provides instructions for a chemistry laboratory activity using an online molecular geometry simulator. Students are asked to build molecules with varying numbers of domains and observe their molecular geometry, electron geometry, bond angles, and take screenshots. 2. Tables are included showing different combinations of total domains, bonds on the central atom, and lone pairs on the central atom, along with the resulting molecular geometry, electron geometry, and bond angles. 3. Molecules are built ranging from 1 to 6 total domains to observe different geometries such as linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, and octahedral.

Directions:
1. Log onto a computer and navigate to this web page: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/molecule-
shapes/latest/molecule-shapes_en.html or use the PHET application.
2. Click MODEL.
3. Toggle the check boxes for: MOLECULE GEOMETRY, ELECTRON GEOMETRY, and SHOW BOND ANGLE.

Your task is to build molecules with varying numbers of DOMAINS.

A DOMAIN is a group of electrons attached to a central atom. Single bonds, double bonds and triple bonds are each
a single domain. Also, lone pairs are a domain.
For each molecule, note its MOLECULAR GEOMETRY, ELECTRON GEOMETRY, and its BOND ANGLE. Also, take a
screenshot of the built molecule. The molecule can be rotated for easier viewing. Once you’ve completed each
section, you’ll be asked to draw some conclusions.
