TECHNICAL BULLETIN TB04-2022
BATTERY LIFETIME ON BATTERY POWERED GMDSS
PRODUCTS
Jotron manufactures more than 30.000 EPIRB, SART and VHF battery packs (Lithium) every year.
So, batteries are never old in Jotron Stock.
The battery types we use have less than 3% self-discharge per year.
From introductions of new IMO MSC.471(101) compliant EPIRBs in 2022, we start a new way of labelling
battery lifetime/service life or Shore Based Maintenance due dates on these EPIRBs, see table at the
bottom of this page in Table 2 for the new products
Table 1. below show a list of shelf life and service life on our products developed before 2022
Definitions:
• Shelf life: The time the product may be in stock from manufacturing date until installed on a vessel.
• Service life: The maximum lifetime the product can be labeled to. (According to SOLAS req. of SBM)

Battery expiry is calculated from battery’s production date, useful time may be less than shown here due to transportation
delays, and/or time in warehouse shelf.
2
Shore Based Maintenance (SBM) due date shall be 4 or 5 years from installation (dependent of vessel flag), provided that this
date is less than “Battery expiry” date
