Project Quality Management Overview
Quality Management

Quality is an essential factor to consider and monitor in all projects. It is extremely

important that project managers and program managers understand and have a general
understanding of quality in their project and what the management of quality looks like in
their project’s plans. Quality management includes the “policies, objectives, and
responsibilities so that the project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken”
(PMBOK Guide). There are many ways to organize quality management for a project that
project managers may use.
The importance of quality management in projects is something that should never be
overlooked. There are many factors that may affect a project- these factors could be
negative or positive. Factors may include things like assumptions, miscommunications,
distractions, stakeholder relations, etc (Calvin Sun). What is important about understanding
quality is understanding why it is so important to manage and monitor it. Quality is based
on a team's ability to meet a set expectation of standards regarding the deliverables of a
project. Quality management “complements project management” in that it is a supporting
factor of most important project management disciplines (PMBOK Guide).
We can understand quality management based on three subsections- quality
planning, managing quality, and controlling quality. Planning for the quality of a project’s
deliverables includes things like a project charter, timeline, tools/techniques, and outlines of
the expected deliverables. Managing quality includes a lot of problem solving, data
collection, and quality reports. Controlling quality includes data analysis, performance
evaluations, deliverable verification, and management plan updates. Project managers
should understand each part of the quality management process in order to successfully
monitor the quality of their deliverables.
One essential understanding that is necessary to understanding quality is the
difference between quality and grade of a deliverable. Grade refers to the differences in
technical uses of products or services with the same function. The example to assist this
differentiation is that a product can be high quality and low grade at the same time. This
product would likely have minimal features in comparison to products with the same
function, but the quality of the product is perfect or near perfect. This is also important to
understand so that project managers have a clear understanding of the deliverables and the
expectations of stakeholders.
Key Attributes of Project Quality Management

1. Reliability - this is usually defined as a state in which a project, experiment or test

can consistently produce the desired results. If the project/end product can not
reproduce the desired projects then something went wrong in the quality planning
and control stages.

2. Performance - this is important as the project must be suitable, it meets the required
standards and functions the way that the stakeholder desired. If it does not perform
well or underperforms then it does not meet the standards of that project.

3. Quality Control - The role of quality control in PQM is to be a system created to

maintain standards during all stages of the project. Without this key attribute the
project would derail, as the desired outcome would not meet expectations. It is
important to maintain standards so the desired outcome is generated by the pm.

4. Quality Planning - The role of quality planning in PQM is to design a process that
helps meet established goals during the life cycle of the project. Without project
planning, the outcome ends up underperforming or is not up to the stakeholders
standards.

5. Quality Assurance - quality assurance usually the maintenance of a desired level of

quality in regards to the project or service being provided. This is very important to
the project quality management process which allows a project manager and their
team to perform maintenance and maintain the desired quality of a project, without
this a project manager would not be able to understand or determine the factors that
affect the end quality of the project.

6. Suitability - suitability means that the project has yielded the correct or appropriate
desired result, meaning that this project fits the needs of the stakeholder/s vision. If
the product is not suitable to the needs then the PM has failed.
