To Prepare A Standard Solution of Sodium Carbonate

We weighed out 1.3g of sodium carbonate, dissolved it in 100cm3 of deionized water, and transferred the solution to a 250cm3 volumetric flask to produce a standard solution of known concentration by making the volume up to the mark. Sodium carbonate is a primary standard, so its mass dissolved in a known volume of water provides a solution with a precisely known concentration that can then be used for titrations.

TO PREPARE A STANDARD

SOLUTION OF SODIUM
CARBONATE
THEORY
• We weigh out accurately a known amount
of sodium carbonate,
• Dissolve it in water and make up a solution
to a known volume
• Sodium carbonate is a primary standard, so
the concentration of the solution will be
known
• Diagram
• Chemicals – anhydrous sodium carbonate,
deionised water
Procedure
• Place clock glass on balance and set to zero
• Weigh out 1.3g of sodium carbonate
• Carefully add the sodium carbonate to a
beaker containing 100cm3 of deionised
water
• Wash all traces of the carbonate into the
beaker usig a wash bottle
• Stir the mixture until fully dissolved
• Using a funnel, transfer the solution to a
250cm3 volumetric flask
• Make up to within 1 cm of the mark with
deionised water.
• Add the rest of the water using a dropper
• Read from the bottom of the meniscus
• Invert 20 times to ensure an even/uniform
solution.
