Answer one question from Section A and one question from Section B.

Answer one question from Section A and one question from Section B.
All questions carry equal marks.
You should write 600–900 words for each question.

Section A: Imaginative writing

1 Write a story which begins with the following sentence: As she approached the house, she was
sure she saw a face in the upstairs window. In your writing, create a sense of drama and mystery.

2 Write two contrasting pieces (300–450 words each), one from the perspective of a taxi driver,
driving to the airport, and the other from the perspective of his or her passenger. In your writing,
create a sense of outlook and mood.

3 Write a descriptive piece called The Ocean. In your writing, create a sense of atmosphere, and
focus on colours, sounds and movements to help your reader imagine the scene.

Section B: Writing for an audience

4 You have been asked to write a review of the latest book written by a well-known author. The
review will be published in your school magazine. Write the review. In your writing, give your
opinion of this book, and how it compares to the author’s previous ones.

5 Your local newspaper recently published an article on the pros and cons of giving children pocket
money. Readers were invited to write letters in response to this article. Write two letters (300–450
words each), one in favour of giving children pocket money, and the other against it.

6 The principal of a large college is going to give a welcome speech to new students on the first
day of the school year. Write the text of the speech. In your writing, focus on developing a positive
mood towards the year ahead, and create a sense of enthusiasm and motivation.
