The Effect of COVID-19 on Tricycle Drivers’ Revenue and the Impact to the
Commuters
Introduction
The temporary closure of businesses and the restrictions in movement of people
has greatly reduced the need for transport services. No more incoming and outgoing
tourists. Schools are closed. Senior citizens and youth below 18 are not allowed to go
out. By force of regulation, tricycle drivers can only carry one passenger per ride. As
they can carry only one passenger at a time, some drivers need to rise up earlier than
usual so they can get some headway and also work until night-time, hoping they can still
get more passengers. Curfew is set at 9 pm even during General Community Quarantine
so some drivers stay up until 8 pm, so they still have time to go home right in time for the
curfew to take effect. Some of them pleaded with customers to increase the fare that they
pay. Some were successful while others were not. Some were also thankful that some
passengers who understood their situation give more. Some drivers who were renting
their tricycles were also fortunate that their lessors decreased the daily rent. Step Up
Consulting, a local firm based in Tagbilaran City but with projects across the globe
volunteered to conduct this assessment. This research is funded solely by the firm. (July

Motorized tricycles, or simply tricycles (a motorcycle and sidecar in the rest of
the world), are an indigenous model of the auto rickshaw and a popular form of public or
private transportation in the Philippines. These public utility vehicles, including taxis,
either adopt a fixed route or are available for hire. "The tricycle is the most common
mode of transportation in Boracay", according to William C. Pollard. (April 27, 2013)
The exact date of the tricycle's entry to the Philippines is uncertain, but it began
shortly after World War II, probably almost at the same time as the jeepney. It is most
likely based on the Rikuo Type 97 military motorcycle that the Imperial Japanese Army
first used in the Philippines in 1941.
In 1789, two French inventors developed the tricycle, a three-wheeled vehicle
operated by pedal. DENIS JOHNSON, a British inventor, patented his approach to
creating tricycles in 1818 according to Steve Greene. (2011)
It is true, in fact, that nowadays, tricycle drivers are struggling for their regular
income, because today, people can't go outside especially senior citizens and 18 below
(as mentioned above) and just 1 passenger per trip. Without a pandemic, their job is
easier because many people are preparing to leave whenever and wherever they want, and
drivers can transport more than two passengers. And the more passengers they have, the
better their revenues will be, and they will be able to help their families before the
pandemic occurs. It's more rampant here in Mindanao on our observation, because we've
already tried to ride a tricycle.
The goal of this study is for people to understand what drivers want, which is why
they want the public to be aware of it.
Research Question
This research analyzed the effect of COVID 19 on the revenue of the tricycle
driver.
Specifically, the study sought answers to the following question:
1. How much is the income they earn in a day?
Scope and limitations
The aim of this study was to determine the income of every tricycle driver before
and after the Covid-19 Pandemic. This took place in one of Pagadian City's barangays.
This study considered Tricycle Drivers' as our respondents.
This study aimed on tricycle drivers and the commuters in Pagadian City,
specifically in every barangay. A survey takes three to four days to complete. This will be
a quantitative analysis with a descriptive-correlation data collection design.
The entire evaluation was based simply on the respondents' responses to the given
survey questionnaires. The researchers conducted this analysis using a 5-item sample
questionnaire as the testing instrument. Sex, faith, and personal status of the
respondents were not included as covariates in this analysis.
Significance of the study
The passengers are the most valuable beneficiaries of this study because they
send money to the driver to reimburse them, which allows the driver to make money.
Tricycle drivers are struggling to make a living because many people, mostly
senior citizens and those under the age of 18, are unable to travel outside and can only
carry one or two passenger per ride.
Researcher themselves, the income level of tricycle drivers in Pagadian City will
be determined by the researchers.
Future Researchers. For other scholars focusing on similar subjects, this study
may serve as a resource and a path map.
