2. SCOPE OF WORK:
For the proposed major bridges, it is required to

absence of mountains; the most elevated point is about four hundred and thirty
feet above the sea; and there are few points of view from which any expanse of
country can be surveyed. The verdure and beauty of the groves with which it is
studded in every direction redeem the prospect from bare ugliness, and when the
spring crops are green and the hills yet full of water, the richness of the landscape
is very striking. Here and there patches of uncultivated waste are to be seen, but a
high assessment and security of tenure are rapidly converting them into waving
fields of corn. Towards the north, especially along the old bank of the Ghaghra,
the ground is undulating and richly wooded, while to the south there is a gentle
slope down to the Gomti. The monotonous level is broken on the north by an
abrupt fall, the ridge running parallel to the Ghaghra at a distance of from one mile
(1.6 km) to three miles (5 km), is said to indicate what was formerly the right bank
3.2 Climate:
The district lies in the plains of the state, and hence its climate
conditions are quite similar to the average climate condition of the plain. Hot to
very hot in summer, cold to quite cold during winters and humid to very humid and
sultry during rainy season. Most of the rain occurs from June to September and
often in November to January. The winter sets in November and continues till
February end. The maximum temperature recorded in 1997-98 was 45 ̊̊C and
minimum was 2.5 ̊C. The average rainfall recorded for 1997-98 was 1056mm.

3.3 Geology:
geological as the plain itself. The soil structure of the district is composed of
alluvial soil, the soil brought in by the rivers. The upper belt is called ‘Upahar’
and the soil texture is yellowish clay. The basin land of the rivers is mostly
sandy soil, and the land adjacent to the rivers is sandy loam. The only mineral
of any note found in the district is sand, which is available in sufficient quantity
on river banks, and is used in construction work. The district is also noted for its

5. FIELD INVESTIGATION:
The field investigation work at this site was carried
out from March 6th; 2019 to March 14th; 2019. The following investigation work
5.1. Ten numbers of boreholes of diameter 150 mm were made within the
proposed layout of each major bridge. The boreholes were progressed using
power operated winch under percussion method. Casing was used to keep
the borehole stable. The records of achieved depth of bore holes and their
GPS coordinates have been given in Para No. 7 “Ground Water Table” and
PLAN” in Appendix A.
5.2. Standard Penetration Tests were conducted at 1.50 metre as per the
procedure in IS 2131-1981 in all the bore holes. For conducting the test, the
bottom of the borehole was properly cleaned and split spoon sampler was
properly seated in position in the borehole. The split spoon sampler resting
on the bottom of borehole was allowed to sink under its own weight; then the
sampler was allowed to penetrate 15 cm with the blows of the hammer 63.50
kg weight falling free through 75cm, thereafter the split spoon sampler was
further driven by another 15 cm. For the 3rd and final drive, the sampler was

The total blows of penetration for the second and third 15 cm of penetration
cohesive soils.
In case the blows count of SPT in soil (including the number of blows of
seating) exceeds 100, the corresponding penetration was recorded and this
particular test at that depth stopped. If the total penetration is more than the
SPT ‘N’ values are correlated with relative of non-cohesive stratum as per
BS: 5930 (1999) - for sandy strata and with consistency of cohesive stratum.

6.1. Field moisture contents were determined by oven drying method as per IS
2720 (part II)-2010. The results have been reported in table 1 to table 10

1498-1978. The detailed nature of the soil strata have been reported in table 1 to
consist of low to intermediate plasticity silty clays and silts which overlain by loose
to medium dense silty and followed by very dense poorly graded sand with silt. The
foundation for the proposed railway bridges has been calculated for bored Cast-
in-situ RCC pile foundation as per IS: 2911 (part-1, section-2)-2010. Load
bearing capacities of RCC piles of diameter 1000 mm with varying length has
been worked out. The cut-off level has been considered at 2.0 metre below the
