Teacher Reflection on ADD Strategies

This document contains a teacher reflection form submitted by Helen Jane V. Largo. It summarizes her strategies for addressing different types of learners in her class. For a student named Clara who has difficulties focusing and following instructions, Helen researched Clara's learning disability, ADD. She modified instructional materials to keep Clara engaged, and provided strategies like giving one task at a time, touching Clara's shoulder to get her attention, and seating Clara in a low distraction area. Helen also included a sample lesson plan highlighting strategies for gifted students. The lesson involves an interactive activity called "Agree or Disagree" where students examine health-related statements and explain whether they agree or disagree. The lesson aims to

DIRECTIONS: Reflect on your attainment of the RPMS objective by answering the questions/prompts provided. Use
any local or official language that you are comfortable with. Use extra sheets if needed. Please limit your response to
500 words.

OBJECTIVE 9
Designed, adapted and implemented teaching strategies
that are responsive to learners with disabilities, giftedness and talents
PROMPT #1
Context: Clara is often seen restless or unfocused in class. She also has troubles following instructions and skips activities when
left unsupervised.
Action Taken: You had a conference with her parents and found out from them that Clara was diagnosed with a learning
disability.

How will you modify the instructions for Clara to keep her focus on classroom activities? Write your reflections in this form.
Mention in your reflections a specific learning disability that you are familiar with or have researched on.

YOUR REFLECTIONS

It is observed that Clara is restless or unfocused in class, having troubles in following instructions and
skips activity when left unsupervised. Then we, as teachers need to have extra care and attention to gain a better
understanding of her condition. In that way we can help the child/student to cope up with his/her learning discomfort.

Calling the attention of the parents and reaching out to them is also very helpful to know and evaluate why
and how does a child behave in such. After having a conference with Clara’s parents, I discovered that she has a
learning disability. I immediately researched about her learning condition to adjust and make a suitable and creative
learning activity especially for her situation.

According to my research, Clara has an ADD is the term commonly used to describe symptoms of
inattention, distractibility, and poor working memory. ADHD is the term used to describe additional symptoms of
hyperactivity and impulsivity. Both are included in the medical diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Although, ADHD is not a learning disability, as it does not affect a person's ability to learn a specific skill set, such
as reading, writing, or mathematics rather it is a learning difficulty caused by a neurobehavioral disorder and is the
most diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children. A student with ADD might be considered daydreamers or appear to
be disinterested and disorganized in the classroom or the workplace. They can also be prone to forgetfulness and
losing things, and struggle to follow instructions.

To deal with Clara’s learning disability, I decided to modify, create, and design instructional materials that
is exciting and engaging to easily catch her attention. It is important to give her a special task of having a checklist
or a planner of what she needs to do in order for her to stay organized. I should give a task one at a time so that she
can focus since students with ADD are easily frustrated.

Gently touching her arm/shoulder to get her attention then give brief, simple steps, and short commands
to get to the point and easy to comprehend. As to her learning environment, I should place her in an area with fewer
distractions so she can focus on the lesson and/or seating her next to role model students who could help her stay
focused on task without distractions. I will also guide and facilitate her and check her from time to time to check
towards her progress in the activity. To motivate her, I will praise her good behavior more than criticizing her bad
behavior to develop self-esteem. Lastly, her work and outputs should be monitored frequently.

By these strategies, I believe that I could be of any help in providing a great learning environment for her
to be motivated and to stay focused on classroom activities and task especially made considering her special
condition. Thus, creating new learning experience which is differ from her usual activity in school will possibly open
her interest and excitement to participate in school. Everyday should be a new and exciting learning for her so that
she will be motivated to go to school and attend classes every single day.
