Learning Insights

Choosing social work as a career equips an intern with ambition, desire, vision, and the desire to
do the best things. My internship opportunity provided a more significant career opportunity for
me to grow as more emphasis was put offering guidance and supporting the disadvantaged
communities. My 500 hours internship program provided me appropriate skills , very treasured
experience, the knowledge I gained from my supervisor, staff, co-interns as well as to our clients.
Actually, my internship experience was a journey to the moon and back. It was a whole new
experience. My skills in gathering data has been improved since I was exposed doing interview
to our clients, I also learn more about the children with special needs since we do a lot of
outreach program during my stay at Oasis , I also learn how to assess client needs and help them
obtain needed resources. . They also allow us to administer various psychological test I learned
the appropriate set of test for employment, promotion and for counseling.

The center I was in was always flooded with clients who needed various services from us .Many
of our clients come from various backgrounds and cultures than we (both interns and staff) are
accustomed to which I must be aware of when interacting with them. Juggling of many clients at
ago became very difficult for me to handle; it’s challenging being a new intern.

I had in mind that our field is congested with very emotional people since we cater clients who
has mental health like anxiety, depression etc. It also dawned on me that a social worker should
be an empathetic person. Practicing empathy in a strict person is very difficult. Some clients are
rigid and hard to control. I realized it is good for me to improve on my empathetic skills in the
future to serve better.

My internship with Oasis and seeing how many of our clients struggle from anxiety, depression,
Rape case, substance abuse has truly solified my thoughts to pursue social work. Most of the
client I had encounter was children who were experiencing learning disability with no one to
take care of them. Have you imagined being left behind ? This became my nightmare during my
internship. I have definitely become a social worker within the last couple of months, I have
become more aware of my values and beliefs while taking into consideration other individuals
values, beliefs, goals and their needs. I hope this course will push me forward for the career I
want to pursue in the future. I would like to work in the field of social work and hope to specify
in working with children with learning disability. I understand some of the situation I may be
faced since I encounter a lot of them during my internship at Oasis and it may be very
challenging however this will give me motivation to help individual overcome challenging
situations.

I look forward to embracing my next role. I know I will continue to be a life-long learner, but I
can acknowledge now that I have skills that I have developed during my first practicum that I
can bring into my next journey. I hope to offer my skill set fully to communities, and to continue
developing opportunities for growth.
