LP For Co1

This lesson plan discusses teaching students about sensory imagery. The objectives are for students to define sensory imagery, explain its importance, and identify the type of sensory imagery used in sentences. The lesson involves a motivation activity where students describe a brownie using their senses, and an online game to identify different types of sensory imagery in sentences. The lesson explains the five types of sensory imagery that engage the senses: visual, gustatory, tactile, auditory, and olfactory imagery.

Short Recap:
Last week, we discussed about the correct usage of modal
verbs and adverbs.
We will be discussing a new lesson today. Are you ready “Yes, Ma’am! We are ready!”
to discover something new this morning?

I will each be giving you a piece of brownie. I want you to

closely observe its appearance, its texture, its smell and
its taste.
Write a sentence describing brownie that you just ate. Responses may vary

Questions:
1. What was your basis in writing the sentences? 1. My basis was my experience in
eating, seeing, feeling, and
smelling the brownie.
2. Do you think it is possible to see, smell, hear, taste, 2. I think it is possible by just using

Linking Sentence:
All your answers are valid and correct. In your Science
class, you have learned that humans have 5 senses: sight,
smell, touch, taste, and sound. In English, authors use
words which connects to the readers 5 senses. These
words create an image in the mind of the reader to help
them see, smell, hear, touch, and taste things without
actually experiencing it. This is called SENSORY IMAGERY.

Today, you are expected to:

a. Define sensory imagery
b. Explain the importance of sensory imagery
c. Identify the type of sensory imagery used in a
sentence
C. ACTIVITY

Sentence Analysis (Online Game via Kahoot!)

We will be playing a game online. Please open your
internet browser on your phone and go to www.kahoot.it.
Afterwards, enter the game PIN that I will be flashing on
the screen.

In this game, you will be identifying the type of imagery

used in the sentence. There are four choices to choose
from: Olfactory for smell, Gustatory for taste, Visual
for sight, Auditory for sound, and Tactile for touch.
You will each be given 20 seconds to click the correct
answer, but the student who will be able to answer the
fastest gets more points. At the end of the game, the
student with the highest number of points gets a price.
Are you ready?
1. Gustatory Imagery
1. My mother baked a very sweet chocolate cake for
my birthday. 2. Auditory Imagery

E. ABSTRACTION

Sensory Imagery involves the use of descriptive language

to create mental images. Sensory imagery works by
engaging the reader’s five senses: sight, sound, taste,
touch, and smell.
There are 5 types of visual imagery. We will be
differentiating each type of sensory imagery.
1. Visual imagery engages our sense of sight. This is
what you can see and includes visual descriptions.

Can you think of words that we can use to show Dark, beautiful, colorful, bright, long, thin,
visual imagery? etc.

Physical attributes including color, size, shape,

lightness and darkness, shadows and shades are
all part of visual imagery.

Example: The night was black as ever, but bright

stars lit up the sky in beautiful and varied
constellations.

Can someone give us a sentence that uses visual She has thick, long black hair.
imagery?

2. Gustatory imagery engages the sense of taste.

This is what you can taste, and includes flavors.

Can you think of words that we can use to show Sweet, sour, salty, bitter
gustatory imagery?

This can include the five basic tastes – sweet,

salty, sour, bitter, and umami – as well as the
textures and sensations tied to the act of eating.

Example: The candy melted in her mouth and

swirls of bittersweet chocolate and slightly sweet
but salty caramel blended together on her tongue.

Can someone give us a sentence that uses gustatory The cake I bought from the store was too
imagery? sweet for my liking.

3. Tactile imagery engages the sense of touch. This

is what you can feel, and includes textures and the
many sensations human beings experience when
touching something. Differences in temperature is
also a part of tactile imagery.

Can you think of words that we can use to show

tactile imagery? Rough, soft, smooth, hard, etc.

Example: The grass tickled his skin and sweat

cooled on his brow.

Can someone give us a sentence that uses tactile

imagery? The fabric of the dress I was wearing was
4. Auditory imagery engages the sense of hearing. so soft.
This is the way things sound.

Can you think of words that we can use to show

auditory imagery? Loud, silent, shout, sing, etc.

Example: I was screaming and shouting at the top

of my lungs when I saw the burglar.

Can someone give us a sentence that uses auditory

imagery? The sound of the ocean waves rushing
through the shore calms me.
5. Olfactory imagery engages the sense of smell.
Scent is one of the most direct triggers of memory
and emotion, but can be difficult to write about.
Since taste and smell are so closely linked, you’ll
sometimes find the sane words, such as sweet,
used to describe both.

Can you think of words that we can use to show

olfactory imagery? Sweet, smelly, etc.

Example: She smelled the scent of sweet flowers

wafting through the air its tropical smell a
reminder that she was on vacation in a beautiful
place.

Can someone give us a sentence that uses olfactory

imagery? The perfume I’m wearing smells a lot like
roses and a blend of other sweet-smelling
flowers.

The Wonderful Pear Tree

(A Chinese Folktale)
Translated by Helbert A.Gil

Once upon a time, there was a countryman who sold loads of special pears. On market day, he set up his
barrow and soon after, surrounded by a great crowd. Then, a poor, old, ragged, hungry-looking priest
stopped in front of him and begged from the countryman one of the pears, but the countryman refused.

A man in the crowd said that the he must give the priest a rotten pear because that will make him happy
and all the people began shouting. Then the constable of the market pulled some cash out of his purse,
bought a pear and gave it to the priest for he is afraid that the mandarin might hear their voices.

The priest took the pear with a low bow, and told everyone that the pear must grow first. He ate up the
pear leaving a single seed and took a pick, dug a deep hole, planted the seed, covered it with soil and
asked someone to fetch him some hot water for the seed.

While he was watering it, they saw first a tiny green sprout. Then one leaf uncurled, and the shoots kept
growing taller and taller; then there stood before them a young tree with a few branches and a few leaves;
and ripe, huge, sweet-smelling pears. Then the priest picked the pears with a bow and took the pick again,
hacked the tree until it fell and carried it all with a final bow and walked away.

All the time, the countryman forgot about his barrow. When the old priest has gone and the crowd was
getting thin, he turned to see his barrow and saw with horror that it was empty. Just as he turned at the
corner, he saw lying close to the wall his barrow-handle. Without any doubt it was the very “pear tree” the
priest cut down. The crowd split their sides with laughter, and the priest was never seen anymore.
