Hate, like, love and prefer:
We can use hate, like, love and prefer with an -ing form or with a to-infinitive:

Examples: I hate to clean the bathroom.

I love going to the cinema.
I prefer listening to the news on radio than watching it on TV.
He prefers not to wear a tie to work.

In American English, the forms with to-infinitive are much more common than the –ing
form. There is a very small difference in meaning between the two forms.
The -ing form emphasizes the action or experience.
The to-infinitive gives more emphasis to the results of the action or event.
We often use the -ing form to suggest enjoyment (or lack of it), and the to-infinitive form
to express habits or preferences.

I like making coffee.
emphasis on the
He likes telling jokes.
experience/action
They don’t like sitting for too long.
I like to make coffee every morning.
I prefer to watch romantic movies
a habit or preference
If you prefer not to go camping there
are youth hostels nearby.

Object pronouns:
Object pronouns are those pronouns that receive the action in a sentence. They are:
me, you, him, her, it, us, you and them. They are used instead of nouns, usually because
we already know what the object is.
It makes the sentence easier to read and understand and avoids repetition. We normally use
object pronouns after a verb (e.g "like") or a preposition (e.g "to").

OBJECT PRONOUNS
Examples:
Subject
Object Pronoun
Pronoun
I Me I like you but you don't like me.
You You Do you really hate her?
He Him
She loves sitting next to him.
She Her
It It She always writes e-mails to us.
We Us He's talking to her about it.
You (plural) You
They Them

The Object Pronoun – it:

Be careful when using 'it' as an object pronoun because it is only in the correct context that
it has meaning. It needs to have already been mentioned or obvious to the listener what you
are referring to. Compare;

 You are sitting on it! (The listener probably doesn't know what the speaker refers to).

 The letter is on the sofa. You are sitting on it! (It is obvious in the second sentence that
the reference is to the letter)

I. Which object form of the object pronoun can substitute the underlined phrase in
the sentence?

a) it b)him c)her
6) Sally is talking to Ann.
a) she b) her c)him
7) Can you help my sister and me, please?

Hello everybody! My name is Sandra and this is my lovely family. image_type=photo
My mother’s name is Rose. She is a housewife and she is 32 years old. She gets up at 7
o’clock every morning and prepares breakfast. Later, she cleans our house and feeds our
dog. She likes listening to the radio and watching soap operas on TV, but she does not like
washing our dog. She usually meets her friends at home and she makes delicious cakes. I
love eating them! She is the best mom and I love her very much. My father’s name is
Peter. He is 35 years old and works at a factory. He always takes a shower at 7:30 and
leaves home at 8:30. He gets on the bus and arrives at the factory at 9 o’clock. He really
likes his job but he does not earn much. He comes back home at 7 o’clock in the evening
and plays with me. On Sundays my father likes watching soccer on TV but he doesn´t
play it. Mary and Paul are my siblings. Mary is 10 years old and she is an elementary
student. She is very intelligent. She loves studying 5 hours a day. In her free time she likes
watching action and animated movies but hates horror movies. These movies are not for
her. Paul is 11 years old and he is an elementary school student too. He always meets his
friends and play with them in the park. They prefer riding their bicycles in the afternoon
after school. Paul likes eating fast food but he doesn’t like vegetables. On weekdays we
have different activities but on weekends we really like spending time together. We go to
the movies or go to an amazing local ice shop near our house. I love going to this place
because there are many flavors: chocolate, vanilla, lemon, etc. I love them!
