The listening test for the Grade 1 examination is about to begin. Listen carefully to the
directions. You will not be permitted to ask questions during the test.
This test has four parts. All of the questions in these four parts are multiple-choice
questions. For each question, choose the best answer from among the four choices written
in your test booklet. On your answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark
your answer. You are permitted to take notes for every part of this listening test.
Now, here are the directions for Part 1. In this part, you will hear 10 dialogues, No. 1
through No. 10. Each dialogue will be followed by one question. For each question, you
will have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on your answer
sheet. The dialogue and the question will be given only once. Now, let’s begin.
(★=男性 A ★★=男性 B ☆=女性 A ☆☆=女性 B)
★No. 1
★★: How was your vacation in Montana, Lisa? Catch anything?
☆☆: Not a single fish for five whole days.
★★: Well, at least it took your mind off work for a while.
☆☆: You can say that again. Work was the furthest thing from my mind. The only thing I
thought about was why the fish weren’t biting but the mosquitoes were.
★★: Well, in that sense, then, your vacation was worth it.
★Question: What does the man say about Lisa’s vacation?
★★No. 2
☆: I spent nearly three whole days preparing my tax returns.
★: That couldn’t have been very pleasant. Why did it take so long?
☆: I sold one of my houses this year, and I also had a lot of capital gains on stock
investments.
★: It sounds like you had a pretty good year.
☆: Well, it was good until I realized how much tax I have to pay!
★★Question: What can be inferred about the woman?
☆☆No. 3
★★: Brenda, are you going to make it to the Neighborhood Association meeting tonight?
☆: Oh, I forgot all about it and made another commitment.
★★: Well, I think you should cancel it and come to the meeting. There are important items
on the agenda.
☆: What’s so pressing?
★★: We’re going to discuss the proposed expansion of Ninth Street and the development of
another park in the area. City council members will be there to receive our input.
☆: I don’t want another big street going through our neighborhood, but I sure would like to
see another park.
★★: Well then, show up tonight and make your voice heard.

☆☆Question: What is the woman opposed to?
☆No. 4
★: Could you spare a few minutes? I’ve got a couple of questions about reimbursements for
business trips.
☆☆: Sure. Fire away.
★: Well, first, how much do we get for airfare?
☆☆: As long as you’re not flying first class, you’ll get full reimbursement.
★: Wow! Even for business class?
☆☆: Yes, that’s always been the policy.
☆Question: What surprised the man?
★No. 5
★★: See you later, Kay. I’m off to the gym.
☆☆: Since when did you become Mr. Fitness?
★★: I got this great deal at the new gym in the mall—a one-year membership for only 300
dollars.
☆☆: And you really think that’s a good deal?
★★: Well, yeah. All the equipment is state-of-the-art, and they have four Jacuzzis.
☆☆: You know the place across the street from my office? With the Olympic-sized
swimming pool? I got two years there for that price.
★★: Great. Now you tell me.
★Question: What does the woman imply?
★★No. 6
★: There’s no way we can do this project in-house.
☆: Even if I assign more members to your team and give you more time to finish?
★: No. We just don’t have people on staff with the necessary skills.
☆: How about I work up a budget for some outside help?
★: Thanks. If you could do that, it would make all the difference.
★★Question: How does the woman suggest that they solve the problem?
☆☆No. 7
★★: Well, ma’am, looks like you have a problem with your car’s electrical system. Just sign
here, and we’ll make any necessary repairs as quickly as we can.
☆: I want you to give me a call if the repairs go over two hundred dollars.
★★: Two hundred dollars doesn’t go very far these days, ma’am.
☆: I understand that. I just want to know what you’re going to do before you go ahead and do
it. Then I can decide whether it’s really needed.
★★: No problem. Rest assured we’re reputable and do quality work. Be sure to write your
phone number on the form over here.
☆☆Question: What is the woman’s concern?
☆No. 8
☆☆: Did you hear they’re closing down the Geography Department, Mark?

★: Yes. With all these budget cuts, I’m wondering whether we’ll get the ax, too.
☆☆: I think our jobs are safe, at least for the moment. Media Studies is still a very popular
department. But we might lose some of our adjunct professors.
★: That’d be tough. I don’t think I can take on any more courses.
☆☆: Me, neither. Everyone’s already overloaded.
★: I guess we’ll just have to hope for the best.
☆Question: What are these people worried about?
★No. 9
★★: Hey, Wendy, how’s the new president of your university working out?
☆: She’s not so new. It’s already been 18 months since she started. She laid low for the first
year so she could get a handle on the issues and personnel involved. Now she’s started
shaking things up. She’s pretty sharp.
★★: She’s young, too, right? I remember you said some people were against hiring her
because they felt she didn’t have the experience.
☆: Yes, but she’s brought a fresh perspective and solid ideas. For example, we’re starting a
global communications program next year that’s already attracting interest.
★★: What about overall enrollment? Is it still dropping?
☆: Only in a few departments. Overall, enrollment’s been flat this year, but I think we’ll see a
turnaround in the next year or two.
★★: That’s good to hear. Has she brought new people on board?
☆: Yes, several staff followed her from her old position. And they’re all as forward-thinking
and on the ball as she is.
★★: And what about all the problems with interdepartmental politics and personnel
management you were having?
☆: Well, with the changes being made, several of the troublemakers are retiring or being
transferred. Communication between departments has already improved enormously.
★Question: What do we learn about the university president?
★★No. 10
☆☆: Dave, in the next long-range planning meeting, I’d like to recommend expanding the
hotel division.
★: I’m afraid it’s not in the cards.
☆☆: Why not? I think we’ll see a steady increase in guest numbers over the next few years.
★: My sources say headquarters wants to downsize our holdings in that division by selling a
few hotels, and then focus on the airline business.
☆: That’d be a mistake. The hospitality industry was struggling during the economic slump,
but since then our hotel business has been looking up.
☆☆: If the company really wants to sell, we’d be better off waiting until we can show
several years of consistent profit.
☆: We’re already in the black for the year, and things will only improve as the weather
warms up.
★: I agree, but headquarters wants to streamline operations. They’re looking to offload any
ventures that aren’t directly related to the airline business.
☆☆: But I think a case for the connection between the airline business and the hotel industry
could certainly be made.

★: Well, I don’t think they’re interested, and rumor has it a few companies have already
expressed interest in a couple of our hotels. I wouldn’t be surprised if headquarters accepts an
offer sooner rather than later.
★★Question: What does the man believe?
Here are the directions for Part 2. In this part, you will hear five passages, (A) through
(E). Each passage will be followed by two questions, No. 11 through No. 20. For each
question, you will have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on
your answer sheet. The passage and the questions will be given only once. Now, let’s
begin.
☆☆ (A) Triclosan
Triclosan is an antibacterial agent that was created in the 1960s for use in hospitals.
Manufacturers soon began adding it to a wide range of household products such as soap,
deodorant, and even toothpaste. However, recent research has shown that antibacterial soap is
sometimes no more effective than regular soap at preventing the spread of infection. In fact,
the overuse of antibacterial soap can cause some bacteria to mutate, which leads them to
develop a resistance to antibiotics.
Recent studies show that triclosan can have an adverse effect in another way. When
released into waterways, it can react with other chemicals and sunlight. When this happens, it
becomes toxic. Laboratory experiments have shown that it affects hormone production in
animals such as rats and frogs. In addition, a number of researchers are becoming increasingly
concerned about its potential effects on human health, particularly regarding allergies and
asthma. Given these concerns, some governments have declared triclosan a threat to human
health and the environment and are implementing measures to curb its use.
★Questions
★No. 11 What is one thing we learn about antibacterial soap?
★No. 12 What have recent studies shown about triclosan?
★★ (B) Social Mobility in the United Kingdom
Politicians often insist that people from poor backgrounds have many opportunities to
move up the economic ladder. And even in the United Kingdom, with its rigid class system,
this sort of social mobility came within reach of increasing numbers of Britons in the years
after World War II. Professional white-collar jobs opened up in the 1950s as the U.K.
economy expanded, and some of those jobs were filled by people from working-class
backgrounds. But in the 1980s, as the economy began to struggle, the growth in these
white-collar occupations came to a halt, and so did social mobility.
Since the 1990s, the U.K. government has invested heavily in education in an effort to
boost opportunities for the nation’s working class. However, a recent study by the
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD, shows that the future
prospects of a majority of British children can still be predicted from their parents’ economic
position. The OECD study also found that Norway, Denmark, and Finland, which have
greater economic equality than the U.K., have much higher rates of social mobility. In that
respect, the U.K. still has a long road ahead.
☆Questions
☆No. 13 What was the reason for the U.K.’s increase in social mobility in the 1950s?
☆No. 14 According to the OECD study, what has an effect on social mobility in the U.K.?

☆ (C) Indonesia’s Cave Paintings
When primitive paintings of animals and human hands were discovered on the walls
of a limestone cave in Indonesia in 1959, it was assumed they were around 10,000 years old.
A team of researchers recently demonstrated, however, that they are far older. The paintings
were covered with mineral deposits left by water that had dripped down onto the paintings
long after they had been completed. A technique known as uranium-thorium dating was used
to determine the age of these deposits. Since the deposits had to be younger than the paintings
beneath them, the scientists were able to establish a minimum age for the paintings.
One of the images of a human hand is about 40,000 years old, making it as old as
similar European cave paintings. This calls into question the long-held belief that cave art first
emerged in Western Europe. The geographical separation of the Indonesian and European
paintings may mean that cave art sprang up in various regions independently rather than
spreading from one common source. Scientists are currently looking into this hotly debated
question.
★★Questions
★★No. 15 How was the minimum age of the Indonesian paintings calculated?
★★No. 16 What is one thing scientists are currently investigating?
★ (D) Life Experiments
During the 1930s, experiments showed that significantly limiting the calorie intake of
mice lengthened their lives by 30 to 40 percent. As long as the mice received enough vitamins
and minerals, they were healthier than mice that were fed regular diets. Scientists found that
the lack of food reduced the mice’s ability to reproduce. This, in turn, led to a slowing of the
aging process. The scientists believed this slowdown helped the mice survive until food
became plentiful again, and therefore allowed them to produce offspring at a later age.
In a 25-year study that was completed in 2012, researchers restricted the calories in
young monkeys’ diets to see whether doing so would be beneficial for primates. Researchers
fed one group of monkeys a regular diet, and gave 30 percent less food to another group.
However, the life expectancy of monkeys on calorie-restricted diets was no better than the
monkeys who ate normally.
There may be a silver lining for believers in calorie restriction, though. In a study of
older monkeys, those on low-calorie diets tended to develop aging-related diseases, such as
cancer, later than monkeys that were fed regular diets.
☆☆Questions
☆☆No. 17 What did experiments in the 1930s discover about calorie restriction in mice?
☆☆No. 18 What did the study on older monkeys suggest about calorie restriction?
☆☆ (E) Creativity in the Corporate World
In the business world, where risk avoidance and predictability are prized, creativity is
often undervalued. Billionaire and venture capitalist Peter Thiel believes that although
creativity is essential, it is too often inhibited by competition. Thiel says executives are
usually trained by business schools to buy into conservative ideas, many of which are no
longer relevant in today’s ever-changing world. Executives often become too concerned about
their reputations to take a chance on doing something original or fresh, or they fear they might
lose ground to the competition.
Thiel claims that the secret to success is finding a market no one else occupies. His
ideal business strategy is not to dominate the competition, but to ensure there is none. This, he
maintains, allows a company to maximize its profits. According to Thiel, it requires creativity
to identify such a market, as well as leaders who are willing to take a chance on something

無断転載・複製を禁じます
unconventional. On the other hand, Thiel’s critics argue that choosing too narrow a market
could also lead to failure as the company will not be able to continue to grow.
★★Questions
★★No. 19 What does Peter Thiel believe about most executives?
★★No. 20 What potential problem do Thiel’s critics point out?
Here are the directions for Part 3. In this part, you will hear five passages, (F) through
(J). The passages represent real-life situations and may contain sound effects. Each passage
will have one question, No. 21 through No. 25. Before each passage, you will have 10
seconds to read the situation and question written in your test booklet. After you hear the
passage, you will have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on your
answer sheet. The passage will be given only once. Now, let’s begin.
☆(F)You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 21.
★Hello everyone, I’m glad to see you all again. As you’ll no doubt remember, last semester,
we focused on a variety of mechanical issues such as organization and grammar. This
semester, we’ll shift the emphasis to text analysis. What this essentially means is that we’ll
initially focus on discussing assigned readings, and then on using these discussions to develop
your own theses. At the end of each week, you’ll need to make a short presentation outlining
your analysis and conclusions about one of the assigned readings. Your final project will be to
develop one of these presentations into a formal paper. For one of the weekly presentations,
you can also analyze a published text of your own choosing for extra credit. Your final project,
however, should focus on one of the assigned readings.
☆Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.
★★(G) You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 22.
☆It looks like the problem is in the computer screen itself. Unfortunately, since it’s no longer
under warranty, you’re looking at about $300 to fix it. If you opt for repairs, remember that
they can take two to three weeks, so you should plan to be without your computer for a while.
For an additional $700, though, you could just upgrade to a new machine. You said you use
your computer a lot, so if the extra speed and expanded memory would make a difference to
you, that might be a good option. You could consider just buying an external monitor to
connect to your laptop. We have some really nice ones out on our sales floor, and prices begin
at just $200. Finally, in the future, I recommend you purchase an extended warranty when you
buy a new machine. It’s an extra $150, but you can get free repairs for five years.
★★Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.
☆☆(H) You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 23.
★★It looks like the physical therapy has helped you regain mobility in your shoulder. Your
broken nose is another story, however. You had a nasty fracture. It’s possible you may have a
deviated septum, which means the wall of bone and cartilage dividing your nasal cavity is
severely shifted away from the midline. This condition can lead to difficulty breathing
through your nose, sinus infections, and other medical issues. It’s possible this is the cause of
your headaches. Antibiotics would take care of any infection, but surgery is usually the only
way to fix the root cause. Since there’s also a chance your headaches may be unrelated, you’ll
need to consult a specialist to find out for sure. I know you’re reluctant to undergo any more
operations, but if the specialist recommends another one, you should follow the advice.
☆☆Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.

★(I)You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 24.
☆☆OK, I’ve got four candidates who might be of interest. Sarah Roberts has done a lot of
dictation and transcription work. She’s good at writing nonroutine correspondence. Kevin
Anderson’s skilled at managing logistics—he’s handled a lot of conferences and big events.
Rebecca Adams’ background is in website design and management; she can also handle
programming and database software. According to his résumé, Nicolai Karpov has
outstanding interpersonal skills. I confirmed they’ve all dealt with sensitive information, but
both Sarah and Nicolai have less experience in that arena. If we had had more time, I could
have called the temp agency, but since you need someone urgently, we should avoid starting
the search over. Let me know what you want to do.
★Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.
☆(J) You have 10 seconds to read the situation and Question No. 25.
★I have your reservation on file, but since you were so late, we canceled your reservation
and gave the van you requested to another customer. Unfortunately, there are no other vans
available at this time. We do have a mid-sized car for $35 a day. It will seat five adults. The
trunk is quite small, though, so if you have any big cases, I wouldn’t recommend it. We also
have a couple of SUVs. The Crossover can easily accommodate five passengers. The nice
thing about this vehicle is that the cargo area can hold a number of decent-sized cases. There’s
also a larger SUV, which offers even more passenger and cargo space. It goes for $65 a day,
while the Crossover is $45. That’s pretty much it. Unfortunately, the other rental-car company
has already closed for the day.
☆Now mark your answer on your answer sheet.
Finally, here are the directions for Part 4. In this part, you will hear an interview. The
interview will be followed by two questions, No. 26 and No. 27. For each question, you will
have 10 seconds to choose the best answer and mark your answer on your answer sheet. The
interview and the questions will be given only once.
★★Now, let’s listen to the interview. This is an interview with Alan Meadows, who spent
some time on an Israeli kibbutz.
Interviewer (I): You’re listening to Interesting Lives, with me, Stephen Laurie. Today my
guest is Alan Meadows. Welcome, Alan.
Alan Meadows (AM): Hello, thank you.
I: So, could you briefly explain what a kibbutz is and does?
AM: Yes. Well, a kibbutz is a collective community that you can find in Israel. And it’s based
on the principle of equality, and the joint ownership of property. So it’s a kind of social
commune. Traditionally, they’re agriculturally based, but these days they’ve also moved into
various kinds of industry. I was working in the agricultural side of the kibbutz.
I: Has your experience affected your outlook to life at all?
AM: Well, yes. On a personal level, I think that the challenges I faced living away from home
at that, you know, relatively young age led to an increase in my sense of independence and
confidence. The feeling that I could, I could meet certain challenges on my own and adapt to a
different way of life, the ability to meet people from different cultures and make friends
across various social and religious divides. And, of course, the, on a political level, on an
international news level, the Middle East is ver-, is rarely out of the news, and having been
living in that part of the world for some six months, it, it takes on a new, a new meaning and

無断転載・複製を禁じます
importance to me on a personal level.
I: I’m sure. Kibbutz today, do you think, are they essentially the same as they were when you
were volunteering?
AM: Yes, well, I was living there in the early eighties, so that’s quite a long time ago. And I
think they have changed quite a bit since those days.
I: Have they?
AM: There are greater elements of privatization now in the system. Some of the kibbutz, for
example, have hotel accommodation available for people who want to live on the kibbutz but
not work. There are, I believe, even some kibbutz that have, that trade their shares on certain
stock markets.
I: Do you think these changes, you mentioned privatization, do you think these are good
things?
AM: Good or bad, perhaps they’re an inevitable result of capitalism, and, you know, Israel is
a modern, industrialized society. Perhaps the principles of equality and joint ownership of
property that the kibbutz system was based upon are very much of their time, in the sense that
when those communities were first established, it was a very tough, unforgiving environment,
and people had to work together to survive, whereas perhaps these days, those underlying
factors are not so relevant.
I: OK, Alan, that was very interesting. Thank you very much for coming.
AM: My pleasure. Thank you.
★★Questions:
★★No. 26 What is one way Alan’s experience on a kibbutz affected him personally?
★★No. 27 What does Alan think about the way “kibbutz” have changed over the years?
