Though oil and coal fueled international economic growth throughout the twentieth
century, declines in conventional fuel reserves, technological advances, and shifts in
public opinion mean that soon fossil fuels will no longer be the world's primary
energy source.
First, fossil fuels such as oil and gas are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.
Decreasing oil supplies are forcing energy companies to drill in remote areas such as
Alaska, for example. Though there may be enough oil and gas to last another century
or two, extraction is so difficult and costly that alternative fuels are becoming a
better option.
As fossil fuel supplies decrease, technological improvements are making
4 alternative energy more appealing. Sources such as solar and wind power are getting
cheaper every year. Also, improved batteries are making electric cars feasible as a
replacement for gasoline-powered ones.
Finally, public opposition to fossil fuels is rising rapidly. Citizens have realized that
pollution from fossil fuels is threatening humankind's future. Replacing fossil fuels is
surely the best way to combat rising CO2 levels.
Today, limited fossil fuel supplies, technological advances in alternative energies,
and public opposition are bringing about radical changes in the energy sector. It is
therefore highly unlikely that the next generation of humans will depend on
dangerous, unsustainable forms of energy.
