Differentiate The Qualitative To Quantitative Research

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching senior high school students the differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods, including defining each approach, comparing and contrasting them using a Venn diagram, and determining how to write titles for studies using each method. Students will analyze examples to classify them and complete activities to solidify their understanding of the key distinctions between qualitative and quantitative research.

Abstraction

Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research

Quantitative Research
The process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be used to
find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal relationships,
and generalize results to wider populations.
Quantitative research methods
1. Descriptive research – in this method you can simply seek an overall summary of your study
variables.
2. Correlational research – in this method you can investigate relationships between your study
variables.
3. Experimental research – in this study you can systematically examine whether there is a cause-
and-effect relationship between variables.

Qualitative Research
It involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video,
or audio) to understand concepts and opinions or experiences.
Qualitative research approaches
Approach What does it involve?
Researchers collect rich data on a topic of interest and develop
Grounded theory
theories inductively.
Researchers immerse themselves in groups or organizations to
Ethnography
understand their cultures.
Researchers and participants collaboratively link theory to practice to drive
Action research
social change.
Researchers investigate a phenomenon or event by describing and
Phenomenological research
interpreting participants’ lived experiences.

Researchers examine how stories are told to understand how participants

Narrative research
perceive and make sense of their experiences.

Qualitative research methods

1. Observations – recording what you have seen, heard, or encountered in detailed field notes.
2. Interviews – personally asking people questions in one-on-one conversations.
3. Focus groups – asking questions and generating discussion among a group of people.
4. Surveys – distributing questionnaires with open-ended questions.
5. Secondary research – collecting existing data in the form of texts, images, audio or video
recordings, etc.

Application
Individual Activity
The students will answer to the activity by using a Venn diagram. Then, illustrate the
differences and similarities between quantitative and qualitative research.
