sun did not see them.

Text 2 (no. 19 – 22)


Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck, or The Sinking of the Van der Wijck, is an
Indonesian romantic drama film directed by Sunil Soraya and written by Imam Tantowi and Dhony Dirgantoro,
and starring Pevita Pearce, Herjunot Ali, and Reza Rahadian. The movie is based on Hamka’s novel,
entitled Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck and was released in theatres on 19 December 2013.
The story begins when a young man named Zainuddin went to West Sumatra to find the birthplace of his
father and deepen his religiosity. Zainuddin’s arrival was not welcomed by the villagers due to his family
background, but Zainuddin stayed in the village. His meeting with Hayati made him more determined to stay.
Of course, they were helpless to face the obstacles to their romance.
Zainuddin was forced to leave the village but he and Hayati promised to love each other. The problem became worse
when a wealthy man, named Aziz, proposed to Hayati. Hayati accepted the proposal and broke her promise to
Zainuddin. Then, Zainuddin went to Java. With his talent as a writer, Zainuddin gained fame as well as fortune.
Meanwhile, destiny led to Zainuddin meeting Hayati again. Because of gambling, Aziz had lost his money and
properties. Aziz and Hayati came to Zainuddin’s big house to borrow some money and ask for a place to live
temporarily. Zainuddin granted the requests. This made Aziz feel ashamed, give up on Hayati, and commit suicide.
Although Zainuddin still loved Hayati, he refused to make up with her because she had broken their promise.
Zainuddin sent her back to Padang on a royal ship called the Van Der Wijck. Unfortunately, on the way to Padang,
the ship sank, together with Hayati, which left Zainuddin with the pain of Hayati’s death. He lived the rest of his life
in deep remorse.

Loving Money Too Much
There was a man who liked money very much. He worked all of his life and wanted to save all of his money for his
own future. He was a real miser when it came to his money. He loved money more than just about anything.
Even, just before he died, he said to his wife; "Now listen, when I die, I want you to take all my money and burry it
with me. I wanna take my money to the afterlife." So he asked his wife to promise him with all her heart that when he
died, she would put all the money and burry it with him.
Well, one day, he really died. Then he was stretched out in the casket. The wife was sitting there in black clothes next
to her closest friend. When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife
said "Wait just a minute!"
She had a box in her hands. She came over with the box and placed it in the casket. After that the undertakers locked
the casket down and rolled it away. Not long after that, her friend said, "I hope you were not crazy enough to put all that
money in the casket."
The wife turned to her friend and replied; "Yes, because I have promised." Then she continued; "I can't lie. I
promised him that I was going to put that money in that casket with him." Feeling shocked, her friend said; "You mean
that you have put every cent of his money in the casket with him?" Then the wife answered; "Surely I did. I got it all
together, put all the money into my account and I just wrote him a check."
