Recent Trends in Detailing of Structural Steel

This document discusses structural steel detailing, which involves creating detailed drawings for fabricators and contractors. It is a critical process that requires near-perfect accuracy. The detailing process includes assembly drawings, erection drawings, and other documentation. Structural steel is used in a variety of shapes for constructing large buildings and structures. The detailing process connects engineers and contractors and involves tasks such as reviewing designs, raising issues, approving drawings, coordinating trades, and facilitating fabrication and erection.

RECENT TRENDS IN

DETAILING OF
STRUCTURAL STEEL

- Vishal N
▪ Structural steel detailing is a critical process of structural
engineering and demands near-99% accuracy.
▪ Even a tiny error can lead to a loss of valuable time and money.
▪ Structural steel detailing is an important and mandatory process in
all types of manufacturing and construction activities, such as
erection of large and complex structures.
▪ The process of steel detailing is a vital 'communications link' that
connects key professionals such as engineers, architects,
contractors, fabricators and others—all of whom are individually
and collectively responsible for the highest levels of accuracy at
each stage.
▪ A steel detailer is a person who produces detailed drawings for
steel fabricators and steel erectors. The detailer prepares
detailed plans, drawings and other documents for the manufacture
and erection of steel members (columns, beams, braces, trusses,
stairs, handrails, joists, metal decking, etc.
▪ Steel detailing involves the creation of detailed drawings for
fabricators and contractors, and includes plans and estimates,
as well as other reports and important tasks.
▪ The process involves two main types of drawings—Assembly
drawings and Erection drawings.

▪ Assembly/Shop Drawings
▪ Detail Sheets
▪ Gather Sheets

▪ Erection Drawings
▪ E Sheets
▪ Field Work Drawings
▪ Structural steel is a category of steel used for making construction
materials in a variety of shapes.
▪ The shapes available are described in many published standards
worldwide,
▪ Wide Flange Beams – WF Beams/Columns (I Shaped Section)
▪ Hollow Structural Steel – HSS Beams/Columns (Rectangle/Square)
▪ Structural Pipe – Columns (Circular Shaped Section)
▪ Channel – (C Shaped Sections)
▪ Wide Tee – WT (T Shaped Section)
▪ Braces – (WT Braces, HSS Braces & Angle Braces)
▪ Angles – (L Shaped Section)
▪ Plates – (Bent plate/Rectangular Plate)
▪ Rods – (Sag Rods/Rod Braces/Rebars /Dowels)
▪ Pipe – Miscellaneous Steels (Handrails/Guard Rails/ Wall Rails)

Fabricator Back from Approval

Detailer Approval
▪ Reviewing design drawings and finding out the conflicts.
▪ Raising the conflicts and queries as an RFI.
▪ Sending drawings for Engineer Review w/Design Calculations.
▪ Detailing of Shop Drawings.
▪ Generating the Erection Drawings.
▪ Checking Process.
▪ Sending Drawings for the Approval Process.
▪ Receiving the drawings Back from Approval.
▪ Coordinating with other trades like Plumbing, Mechanical,
Elevator etc.
▪ Sending the drawings for Fabrication w/CNC files and
Generating the reports required.
▪ Sending the drawings batch by batch for approval process.
▪ Reviewing each and every shop drawings and erection drawings, by
comparing them with the design.
▪ Checking the drawings to find out whether we followed the proper
codes, the info and everything as shown on design and loading
capacity of members.
▪ If we followed properly , then it will be sealed as Approved
▪ If no, then we need to incorporate the comments and re-submit the
drawings again for the approval process.
▪ The drawings will be send in the order below,
▪ Anchor Bolts
▪ Embed/Lintel
▪ Main Steel (Beam, Columns, Braces etc.,)
▪ Miscellaneous Steel (Stairs, Handrails & Ladder etc.,)
▪ Member Elevation.
▪ Member/Material Grades.
▪ Galvanisation, Paint & Surface preparation.
▪ Cutting process of members in shop.
▪ Bill of Materials.
▪ Bolts to be used for the connection.
▪ Erection Possibilities/Difficulties.
▪ Note for fabrication to taken care in shop
▪ Sending the drawings batch by batch for fabrication process.
▪ By using the shop drawings, the purchased material will be loaded
into the CNC machine, the process on fabrication will begins.
▪ Fabricating each and every materials and members by using the
CNC Files including the cutting and coping process.
▪ Then, Welding the material parts to the beams and columns with the
dimensions as shown on the shop drawings that we sent earlier.
▪ The member will be identified by the unique piece marks.
▪ Then, the members will be loaded on trucks/trailers and shipped to
the construction site.
▪ Setting of Anchor Bolts/Embeds
▪ Site Survey, Levelling and markings,
▪ Excavating the soil,
▪ Pouring the concrete to built the footings and piers,
▪ Placing the Anchor rods into the concrete with the help of levelling plates
by referring the Anchor Bolts Setting plan.
▪ As-built survey.

▪ Main Steel Erection

▪ Erecting the Columns, beams and braces simultaneously by using the
Steel framing plan.
▪ Placing the safety posts, Safety nets in order to provide safety for workers
as per the OSHA Standards.
▪ After steel erection, the steel deck will be placed and welded over the
steel members.
▪ Pouring the concrete to form the floor slab.
▪ Construction of Interior Stud Walls and Exterior Brick /Stud Walls.
▪ SDS/2
▪ Tekla Structures
▪ Bluebeam
▪ Microsoft Office
▪ Strong Construction
▪ Extended Life span of buildings.
▪ Easy dismantling in case of renovation.
▪ Reuse of Steel.
▪ Environment friendly.
▪ Cost of building will be high comparing to Indian Construction.
▪ Shipping the members to the site will be quite difficult.
▪ Erection process takes a bit more time than actual process.
