The only National Artist for Historical Literature.
was a Philippine biographer and historian.
Not only known for his works on biographies and history but also on varied subjects such as the
old maps of the Philippines and also the culinary legacy of the country.

Originated the lyrical prose-poetic form in writing short stories.

He is a writer, novelist, poet, essayist, and journalist.
Regarded by many as the most distinguished Filipino writer in English.
Nick Joaquin uses the name Quijano de Manila.

Francisco Sionil Jose (December 3, 1924 – January 6, 2022)
National Artist for Literature (2001)
He is a publisher, lecturer on cultural issues, and founder of the Philippine chapter of the
International Organization
Jose’s novels and short stories depict the social underpinnings of class struggles and
colonialism in Filipino Society.
He was often considered the leading Filipino candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
