National foreword

This Part of this British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the
Rubber Standards Committee in consultation with the Automobile Standards
Committee. It is identical with ISO 4926 “Road vehicles — Hydraulic brake
systems — Non-petroleum base reference fluids ”.

This is Part 1 of BS AU 1 74 which covers components for vehicle braking

systems using non- petroleum base fluids. It is intended to issue other Parts
specifying non- petroleum base brake fluid and cups, boots and seals for use
in the braking system.

An associated British Standard will specify similar components for vehicle

braking systems using petroleum base fluids.

In drafting this series of British Standards full consideration has been given
to the work of subcommittee TC 22/SC2 of the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) .

Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard

has been approved as suitable for publication, without deviation, as a
British Standard. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical
with those used in British Standards; attention is especially drawn to the
following.

The comma has been used throughout as a decimal marker. In

British Standards it is current practice to use a full point on the baseline
as the decimal marker.

Where the words “International Standard” appear, referring to this standard,

they should be read as “British Standard”.

A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of
a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct
application.

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity

from legal obligations.

This British Standard, having
