This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Automobile
Standards Committee and is identical with ISO 4030: 1 983 “Road vehicles —
Vehicle identification number (VIN) — Location and attachment ” prepared by
Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles, of the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO). This edition of the standard supersedes
BS AU 1 75- 3: 1 979 and extends the field of application to include mopeds.
The 1 979 edition of the standard is now withdrawn.

Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has

been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without
deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those
used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the following.

Where the words “International Standard” appear, referring to this standard,

they should be read as “British Standard”.
