This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Automobile
Standards Policy Committee. It supersedes BS AU 1 78: 1 980 which is withdrawn.

This new edition of BS AU 1 78 has been produced to align the standard with ECE
(United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) Regulation 43.

This edition introduces technical changes but it does not reflect a full review or
revision of the standard, which will be undertaken in due course.

Differences in the text between this edition and BS AU 1 78: 1 980 are indicated by
a line in the margin.
