Assignment WT

1. The document provides the steps and calculations for sizing and designing various water treatment components. These include determining the size of particles that can be removed in a sedimentation tank, sizing a sedimentation tank, calculating particle removal percentages in a sedimentation tank, sizing a slow sand filter, and designing rapid gravity filters. 2. Key details include sedimentation tank dimensions, flow rates, particle sizes and specific gravities, water temperature and viscosity, overflow and filtration rates, population size and water demand, and filter dimension ratios. 3. Calculations are shown to determine the necessary sizes and dimensions of the treatment components based on the design flow rates and water quality parameters provided.

SHOW All THE NECESSARY STEPS WHILE WORKING, MAXIMUM MARK (25)

1 A continuous flow sedimentation tank is 3.5m deep and 65m long. The

flow velocity observed is 1.22cm/s. What size of particle of S.G. 2.65 may

be effectively removed? Assume T=25oC and V= 0.01cm2/s.( kinematic

viscosity)

2. Determine the surface area of settling tank for 0.5m3/se design flow. Using

design flow rate as 32.5m3/m2/d. Find the depth of the clarifier for the

overflow rate and detention time of 95min. Adopt L/B between 2:1 and

5:1, length < 100m.

3. A sedimentation tank is designed for an overflow rate of 5000 m2 liters

per m2 per hour. What percentage of particles of diameter (a) 0.05 mm

and (b) 0.025 mm will be removed in this tank? The temperature of the

water is 20 °C and the specific gravity of particles is 2.65.

4. Find the length and width of slow sand filter required to handle 2 MLD of

water with rate of filtration 200 lit/hr/m2. Assume L:B = 1:2

5. Design the approximate dimension of a set of two rapid gravity filters for

treating water required for a population of 50,000; the rate of being 180

l/d/person. The filter are rotated to work 5000 l/hr/m2. Assume maximum

daily demand to be 1.8 times the average daily demand. Assume L=1.3B

and assume any other data, if necessary.
